I just thought I'd chip in and let people ( particularly in the West Midlands )know that the Two By Two petsore in the Merryhill centre Dudley , is selling DYED Parrotfish. I saw 3 in one of their tanks. I don't know if the store is attatched to any sort of chain that I can write a letter to, but I was disgusted to see the poor things. The store is known for it's appalling animal care and it's fish section is the worst I have ever known. I wasn't entirely surprised to see the dyed fish to be honest.

I have never bought fish from there due to the state of them, and now will not buy dry goods either.

I'd have said something to the staff about it but they are invariably gormless and know very little past scanning things listlessly and generally giving bad advice. I'm going to try and find out if the shop is connected to a chain and email them. Either way I have now boycotted them.

Had a shop where I live (Underwater World), sold dyed fish, luckily enough, the council doubled his rent and he was forced to close. He was a bit of a cowboy to be honest as he sold my cousin some sort of shark that would grow "No More" that 4-5 inches, now he's roughly a foot long and the shop refused to take it back.

Anyhow, no more dyed fish being sold in Stevenage.

have done as everybody else has, hope they take this matter into consideration as it really does need to be stopped. My mp is Gordon Brown :D and hes from my hometown lol

unfortunatly this is still going on, i visited a lfs last week to find them selling dyed albino cories, i was shocked they were all different colours reds, blues, greens and purples, so it seames that the practice is still going strong

Amended, emailed, and sent.

I can not believe that people could be so cruel, i will boycott any shops that i find that sell them, maybe we could start another thread to name and shame shops? (That after asking them to stop stocking them do not comply).

I always wondered about the details for dying fish... after reading this I now know it is a disgusting way to treat an animal and says alot about commercialism and human greed taking a higher priority over ethics for something as stupid as a pretty "wow" I'll buy it factor. Not to mention the fact that once the animal is sold it loses its color anyway. Makes me sick.

I recently went to a LFS and I saw these fish with weird colors and what i thought to be hearts and the word LOVE.
I quickly realized the fish were tattooed. It was not a box store but a little store, i was very surprised. The guy i spoke with said they get random shipments from germany and such. Sometimes they do not know what they are getting. I am very against this kind of thing. It makes me not want to shop there anymore.

What about Glofish. They are breed with the genes in them. Not so cruel, but not natural either.

I know the sale of dyed fish is legal in the US as I see them often. :( But is the actual dying practice legal here?

I almost wish a shop near me sold them so I could kick up a fuss and get them to stop! ;-)

But Near me are 2 LFS one is pets at home (who some people loathe, but I think they are great) and a small private shop that is amazing.

SO Grantham, Lincs has no painted fish retailers.

Yeah I would like to know this too, if anyone has the information. We should start to stir the pot in America.

IF WE DON'T BUY THEM, THEY WONT DYE THEM!
IF WE DON'T BUY THEM, THEY WONT DYE THEM!
IF WE DON'T BUY THEM, THEY WONT DYE THEM!
IF WE DON'T BUY THEM, THEY WONT DYE THEM!
IF WE DON'T BUY THEM, THEY WONT DYE THEM!

There's your chant.

Agreed with the above, it doesn't need to be made illegal, it just needs to be made more public. If the facts of dying fish are widely known by everyone, even new fishkeepers, then the demand will disappear.
If there is no demand, the shops wont stock them, end of problem.
