when you take fish back to lfs do they refund your money?or let you exchange for goods?or do you get nothing like my lfs?i must of taken back £70 worth of fish in the last week and all they did is let me off £4 for my shrimp.im not impressed i must be thier best customer :grr:

Depends on the person. generally, I go to chain stores. however, whenever I have to give away fish, I go to this small lfs I know. I got in-store credit for 3 dollars, not sure how many pounds that is, for my 2 silver dollars, which he probably sold for 7 each. Not necessarily bad... Also, I had given him platies and goldfish before without asking for money, but he would have probably given me credit for 'em.

Generally speaking, though, I think it is rare to get paid anything for fish. :/

i haven't tried taking any fish back to the lfs where i bought my fishes..
although i have loads of baby mollies i have to give away one time, the lfs where i bought my fishes won't take the babies even given to them for free..said no to my 30+ babies...
another lfs (same name different branch) took them, and i have switched lfs since then and never looked back...
i knew then where to do my business...

EDIT: spelling

the 3 balas i gave them were huge i have seen them marked up there the same size for £17 each.i wish i gave them to someone on tff now

In general we give store credit to 50% of the value we can sell the fish on for. The main reason you wont normally be given cash for any fish is that when you buy a fish from the shop in the first place you have some idea about the quality of setup and maintainance it has come from, when a shop accepts fish back or just takes some unwanteds off your hands they have absolutely no way of knowing anything about what the fish has just been through or where it has come from. They wont therefore pay you cash for something that could very easily die of stress related problems by tomorrow morning.

While for some of you with poor LFS's this might seem terribly hypocritical it is just sensible business ;) If you have a trusted LFS you know the quality of the fish there in general, you see the cleanliness and well looked after tanks, you get to avoid any ill fish, you get to see them carefully netted and gently transferred and then bagged well for their journey. When it's the other way around the LFS doesnt get any of that so it has to protect it's interests.

In your case though, it is unfair that they give you so little in return, but in some places if you dont ask you wont get :(

yeah your right i suppose they dont know where the fish have been but while i was there i got them to test the water they came in(i knew it was fine)to show them they have been kept in a well maintained aquarium.i asked him will you trade these for some fish food and stuff and he said yes go and pick what you want.so i got £4 worth of river shrimp 3 packets of frozen bloodworm and a bottle of water conditioner thinking this is a fair trade.get to the counter and he charges me for everything except the shrimp :grr: im gonna go the extra mile to the next lfs in future

that's what i did..
i traveled the extra 6 miles to an lfs where staff are more considerate and friendly..

Wehever I take a fish back to my LFS they always tell me that they wil sel it for me and when they do they will give me 50% of the money that they sell it for.
