Well, today I went to the doctor's office to get my cast off (yay, I hated that stupid thing! And yay, only sprained, not broken!) And they have some goldfish in a display tank. There were no live plants, and there were 6 of them. They all seemed to have that bloated stomach thing? They were trying to swim down, but got about half way and kinda just gave up and floated back to the top. Two also looked like they had some fin rot. Should I mention this to the doctor's? I feel bad for the fish D:

You could tell them your concern's and give them a bit of friendly advice. It might just be they simply don't know how to maintain the tank properly. It's not very pleasant have to look at fish that are not very well.

I'm a 15yr old kid lol. Really think they'd listen? I could just ask my mum to say something?

If your too embarresed to tell them yourself then just ask your mum to or write a letter with a reference to this site or just write the information they'll need down. Just let them know it's not fair to let the fish suffer like that.

this is one thing i hate about some people...they think kids talk a load of bogus bullcrap.

whenever im in the local LFS and here something that is going to ruin the hobby for someone like not cycling a tank i will step in tell them, the reply is normally "your just a kid, what do you know", this gets me peeved, but i can walk away knowing that i was right...i suggest you talk to them, and if they choose to decline your advice, then you can walk away knowing you did your best but they werent prepared to listen.

Not embarrassed- Just pretty sure they'd not listen to anything I said lol, but thanks :)

Okay. I'll try when I go in. Or I might go in just to tell them. Hm.

Anyways thanks for the help. And I know what you mean. I told the "fish expert" at my lps how to tell the difference between male and female platies/guppies. She looked at me like o.o"""""" And I was just like, :D Super chuffed lol.

I'll try that and see how it goes ^^

I agree alot of people are 'ageist'. So in this case I'd definitely try sending a letter first with some care advice, perhaps a link to this site etc.

I had that happen to me once when i got my Cockatoo female, went into a LFS had a look around all the tanks. Saw that there was only one female Cockatoo in a tank with about 6 males, told the guy that i wanted the female. The guy was trying to tell me that he has kept them for years and breeds them all the time. The guy gets the net and then nets up a male, i tell him that he has caught a male and that there is only one female in the tank. He then asks me to point it out because he didnt know which one was the female.

You may well find that the tank is maintained by an external company. Lots of businesses (and or public places) have aquariums that are managed by specialists. It may be that the doctors/staff etc dont know anything themselves about the upkeep of the fish - they leave it to the external company.

Best let the secretary at the doctors know so that she can call in the service providers and get the issue sorted.

yep as saz says lots of doctors and dentists pay contractors to maintain tanks in waiting rooms and stuff just let the reception know your concerns and go from there
regards scot :)

if you get a chance, have a look around the tank. there should be a sticker, somewhere, stating the company that maintains/leases the tank. you could always contact them, to air your concerns. if you couple this with, offering, the correct keeping info to the doctors. perhaps something could be done.

Or you could offer to maintain the tank and earn some pocket money.

Being (nearly, on Saturday) 16 years old, I get the same sort of thing. The LFS that I normally go to have realised though that I do know what I'm talking about when I was able to tell them that their so-called "Balloon Angel Rams" were just variations of the German Blue Ram, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Lol good on you.

Oh, that makes sense. I'll do that. Thanks :D

I didn't actually see a sticker. I looked around the tank and everything, but thanks ^^

*WAYYYY* to shy to do that. I had enough difficulty asking the girl at the pet shop what I'd need to do to get a job there lol.

(Happy Birthday for then :D) Lol. But I don't think they get to happy when kids no more than their fish expert xD
