Bogwood is expensive to buy from LFS's. My LFS gets theirs from a man who has authority to dig it up from boggy places on the moors in Cornwall. My question: Is it possible to make pseudo bogwood using ordinary wood perhaps by dropping wood from apple trees or some other generally harmless wood into a water butt and leaving it there for a year or so? Has anyone done something similar?

I'm not sure about the processes you;d need to turn ordinary wood into 'bogwood' but you can use branches or pieces of wood from hardwood trees (so apple or other fruit trees would be ideal) and just peel off the bark before you put in in your tank

Even though it is hardwood, it would still need to be dry or dead so that the sap has gone. Most of my wood is 'DIY' and i have also used softwoods before. Never had any repocussions from it either. All seems fine.

Due to me being impatient i usually weight the wood down with rocks or wedge it in the tank as it will float.
