Filters get old. Impellers get stuck. Electicity goes out. A tank must be medicated with a med that kills the bacteria and must be restarted. These are just a few things.
One should always have a quarantine tank ready. If you have only have one main tank, it is good to run an extra filter. imo--never enough filtration. It also helps to have a small 5-10 usg with a few minnows or tetras or whatever in a second tank. The quarantine tank is a must for a hobbyist. How that is worked out is individual, but having extra media handy one way or other is a fish saver, like having a medicine cabinet.
By recycle I meant get it cycled again because it crashed.
