Crabs Or Frogs In My Tank

i've got an african clawed frog, and im sad to say he DID enjoy some of my fish! be very careful, you may think that your fish are too large, but trust me they'll manage! so just be careful with that :) and also, i've heard that mixing frogs and crabs isnt a good idea, as they both mainly stay at the bottom of the tank, and if they come into contact with eachother there may be a bit of a bust up!
so be careful :)

Never keep frogs and crabs together - - its not a "be careful" situation - its a Don't even think about it situation!!!

again, these frogs should be kept in species only tanks!

Hi thanks for the reply.

It WAS going to be either or, not both.

I'm gonna get a separate tank now don't want to risk my fish.

Matt.

there is only one reason they cant be kept together. because they live, for the most part, in different environments. frogs are quite safe with crabs (well red claw), as far as being eaten or attacked is concerned. crabs are not killers, they are not even carnivores.

I am sorry but I completely disagree - - It only takes one time to cause damage. Something that should not be risked if the well being of both creatures is being considered

yes getting a seperate tank for your frog is a good idea! :) i have a seperate tank for my ACF and he loves it! If you get largish rocks so they cant eat any gravel, drift wood or little flowerpots to hide in and of course a filter, you'll be set up! :) i dont have a heater in my tank, as its quite close to the radiator and they dont actually need heated water :) i'd love to see your set up if you go through with it! :)

actually...for temperatures - -
when young froglets, 75-78*F is optimal temp,
when young frogs - under 18 months, 73-75* F,
and when adults, 68*+ is best. They can live in cooler waters, but are healthier and more active in slightly warmer temps.

i do have a heater in my tanks just so it never gets below 70*F in the winter time.

oh right :) well thanks for the advice, i'll test the temperature when im home! he seems very active, and has lately developed the black mating hands and chirrups mating calls during the night! :)

aww don't you LOVE their mating calls? We have our tank right next to the bed and at least one of our males chirps every nights - we love the sound (like our own little nature CD lol)

Your frog is just about 9-12 months if he has just developed his nuptial pads - isn't it amazing how much they grow in their first year?!

what color morph is your little guy? name? I love ACF and there is such a small group of people on here who have them that finding another ACF owner is quite a thrill for me haha

yes his mating call is lovely! :) he sits on the desk in my room and i can hear the noise perfectly from bed, i love it :) and yes im amazed by how big he's got in a year! he was a tiny wee man when i first got him, and i wasnt sure of his sex until he developed the mating pads! he's an albino, completely white which makes his claws stand out VERY well, and with huge black eyes! he's quite friendly, and will let you touch him though i dont know whether i'm meant to!?
i almost feel bad that he doesnt have a lady frog in there with him to charm with his lovely call :) what colour is yours?

my colorations? haha heres the list - - (( * = a new coloration being list and the numbers...well they number my frogs lol))

* Natural/marbleds/pieds (considered the same coloration but has multiple names to describe the same thing) -
1. Phantom (male)
2. Jade (female)
3. GrayBaby (Phantom X Kirby offspring)

* Albinos -
4. Phoenix (female)
5. Kirby (female)
6. Andre (male)
7. Louie (male)

* Reticulated Albinos
8. Lola (female)
9. Magellan (male) (Golden Reticulated Albino)
10. WittleBaby (Phantom X Kirby offspring)

* Borealis
11. Aurora (female)
12. Boris (male)

* Tropicalis
13. Amelia

* Piebald (very very rare! occurs less than 8 times in a 1,000,000!)
14. Igor (male)

if you go to my profile page on here there is a link to my own website and you can see pictures of them and my main tank (72 gallons)! Graybaby and Wittlebaby are going to be moving to my sisters house in the next month or so and I have another batch of tadpoles that just started to complete their morphing a few days ago :D )

oh how adorable the tadpoles must be! i've looked through your breeding thread, its awesome :)
definitely going to have a look at your website, would love a look at a rare piebald! bet he's handsome! :)

why would a crab cause damage? you may well think it will, but that's far off it, actually, doing harm. your misconceptions, are fine, passing them on as fact? not so much.

lets look at the FACTS should we?
they are not carnivores. best description is detrevore. they will scavenge from the dead, or dying. but then so will a pleco. indeed a pleco will kill, on occasions.
they do not hunt. they feed from partials at the waters edge.

hard shells and claws are a by product of their genetics. not a sign of aggression, or killer instinct.

there is one reason, and one reason only, these two cant be kept together. because they live in different environments.
