Hi newphishgal :)

It's not usually difficult to tell the sexes apart if the corys are mature and if you have both male and female present.

I like to look down on them from the top of the tank to see which are which. The females will be wider and usually longer to. They often tend to look "chunky" while the males are more "slim."

If you hope to breed them, this is important, of course. But if not, if you only want them to enjoy as members of a community of fish, it will not matter at all. However, they are schooling fish and do best in groups of 3 or more. I like to buy 4 to 6 of them while they are young and this will usually give me at least one of each gender.

What kind of cory do you have or are you thinking about getting? If you give me more information, I might be able to be more specific. Are you thinking about breeding them?
