i always thought my acara was male but since a sudden spurt the fins have really developed a lot and i think they seem to indicate a female what do you think?

are you sure it's a blue acare and not a green terror (gold edge rivulatus)?

females cichlids have shorter more rounded fins and the males get the long pointy fins. I would say it's a young male.

deffo a blue Acara 2nd 2 pics were taken using flash which makes it look more like gt but if you chec pic 1 deffo acara.

Gotta say those angles and lighting do make him look GT like and yes, he is deffo a male :good:

i agree the 2nd 2 pics with the flash do make it look like a gt. i would of thought that at 4 inches tho the fins would be more extended/pointed than they are

tbh he still looks like a relatively young Juvi fish so if he is a male (which looks to be the case) then the fins may still have a bit of growing to do

ok at what size would you say it would be possible to say with 100% certainty?

What is he now? about 3-4" ??? assuming so then yes at 5-6" you should be pretty sure

yeah davo id say hes just about 4 inchesmaybe just a tad under but not far off

He's gorgeous, definitely male I'd say. I'm about 99% sure mine is a female. This photo of her was taken in February, so she's grown a bit since then, excuse the darkness but you can see the difference in the dorsal fin shape, mine is rounder.

that pic looks awfully like a GT IMO

Good way to tell it is a GT is the Tail. If it has orange on the tip good chance you have a GT. They also have in my opinion they look like they have bigger heads.
