Charcoal

hi folks, inside my filter there is a small recepticle full of charcoal, is this needed, do i need to change it? and whats its purpose please.

carbon is not necessary. i don't use it, and neither do a lot of people. what it does is removes chemicals from the water, and some people use it after putting medication into the tank, to remove it. it doesn't feed on your fishes waste.

hi, its main use for people on here is to remove medication after treating an illness. other than that, it isn't very useful, and after a few weeks it leaches chemicals back into the water. i wouldn't replace it, but you might as well keep it in now you've got it.
