it’s never been my intention to breed 2 fish of different species, but I have had several tanks, that that I keep one or more of each variety of fish…
my silver dollar tank is one of those that has several mature fish of several varieties… lately the mature “common” dollar has been saddling up next to my mature red hook, again, not my intention to force breed anything, and not even sure if they are close enough genetically to successfully breed even if they wanted… anyone ever had fish accidentally or purpose cross breed???

I’m sure if eggs were ever laid in this tank, they would get eaten right away anyway… just this affection between the 2 different fish is unexpected…

Tiger gets in the middle, sometimes, but lately tiger and the other 2 are on opposite sides of the tank…

I have some hybrid killies here. I gave 2 species to my daughter, all males except there were eggs in the guppy grass and a female grew out. She (C. poliaki) crossed with (C biteniatum) and produced a beautiful hybrid that ends there. I won't have them breeding here, as both fish are uncommon. If we propagate hybrids, we help make the genuine natural species extinct in the hobby.

But it can happen. Often species develop with no contact for vast periods of time, isolated by geography. But if they meet, it can still work sometimes if they had a common ancestor.

I don't know with silver dollars.
