Carbon Filters

ya, unless you have an issue with murky water or a strong smell coming from the tank... no big need. You can have it and it will become an extra bacteria refuge but if you have large sponges and other media, then it's not really needed

More frequent water changes will clear the water up.
Carbon will remove chemicals and tannins from driftwood but won't make much difference to fine particles floating around. Filter wool/floss will help trap that.

filter/polishing wool : talk to me.

filter wool or filter floss, (Dacron). It is a white acrylic wool substance. It sits in the filter and traps fine particles. You get it from any petshop.

yep just put a layer of it in the filter somewhere. You can fill an entire compartment with it if you want, or just have a thin layer. The more you have the more gunk it will trap. But make sure you keep the other filter media that holds the beneficial filter bacteria.

I like the sound of this - does it have to be replaced often ?

not neccessarily replaced, but def removed and cleaned. because of its small pore size, it traps everything so will fill up with debris quickly. depending on how much waste and debris is created in your tank, I would clean it every two weeks down to maybe less than a week between cleaning on a heavy load tank
