Can Piranhas Live With Anyother Fish

well i suppose you could say that, but i just don't agree with feeding live fish as food. doesn't seem right.

Piranhas are funny fish. Some can live with other fish and some cant. I had 3 piranhas in with my flowerhorn , oscar ,& severum and never thought.

my local LFS are giving away 5 6" RPB for free, was tempted but my tank isnt big enough

just thought i would do an update.

regarding the tank.

currently my Ps are now about4-5" they have more then doubled in size since i got them. i plan to get a 6foot tank when they are a little bigger. i still have the 4 reds in the tank, i feed them pretty well on a mixture of Bloodworms, Cockle, Lancefish & Krill.

they seem to love the Lancefish and bloodworm but there not as keen on the others.. no rip fins or anything.
The Danio is still live and kicking in there.

i am not sure if you can tell but the Ps have grown significantly. i will try to get a better pic but this is all i had on my phone.

p.s live feeders are used all the time. so i cant see how it is cruel when people can easily kill hundres of Live Brineship... 1 fishes life isnt as bad as a bag full of hundreds of Brineshrimp lives.

i have seen large plecs kept with piranhas, but i think it would need to be a bigger tank than the one in your sig i'm afraid, i know its hard to be told that fish cant go together, but thats just the way it is

what about the cows/pigs/goats/tuna/chickens/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc that we slaughter by the thousands for us to eat

everyone is fine with killing thousands of tuna to make a sandwich, but as soon as a single dolphin gets caught in the net, suddenly its a problem.


i say, kill em all!!!!

i wouldn't be so concerned with the "cruelty" of the act, so much as the potential to introduce disease, or the sub-par nutritional values offered by most* live feeders. (in comparison to the manufactured foods specifically formulated with your fish's diet in mind, and usually enhanced with other nutrients)

I'd go with feeders if i could get something to breed easily and could be fed well. it'll save me money in the long run and as long as i do it right should be no issues.

i wouldn't like the fact of feeding live fish to my fish, though i don't think its particularly inhumane, as said its a fact of life, big fish eat little fish. its just my preference to feed prepared foods for the nutritional value.

I never said i agreed with you or not, so dont call me a hypocrit, i just said that your argument about feeding brineshrimp being the same as feeding fish was not a viable argument.

I study animal behaviour at college, and we were looking at animals exhibiting stress and i almost got lynched for suggesting that they feed the polar bears and penguins etc. live fish lol. I don't agree with ALL types of live feeding though.


As for your original question, we have two piranha at college (they were got from the RSPCA) that live with a very large plec, they all seem happy enough

Get a tank of male and female mollies. You will be able to feed them like there's no tomorrow.

RBP's main diet in the wild is injured, dead or stressed fish. They don't go around hunting and chasing perfectly healthy fish. They certainly don't hunt Exodons as suggested. However there are many other reasons not to keep them with other fish. Tanks size would need to be huge in order for room, an I mean pond size rather than tank. A fish big enough and robust enough to live in the pond with it would likely be quite aggressive. This will ultimately lead to that fish having a nip at a RBP, and therefore getting attacked. It wouldn't IMO be unprovoked. In a massive tank a Plec is the only fish I would keep with them, possibly some Exodons. In a massive pond you may get away with others but these would have to be kept in optimum condition in order not not be picked off.

lol i'd just have to say have your net ready to scoop out some dead fish if you don't feed them adequately enough. i wouldn't attempt it though, thats just a personal opinion though

also keep in mind, that they will hurt the "weak link" in their own pack, so if ur set on getting RBP's then have another tank ready, cause once they establish what fish is the weak link they won't take it back into the clan very nicely. i saw some RBP's chowing down on another RBP in the pet store a few weeks ago..... then i came across an article where the weak link issue happened to someone. all i'm saying is be prepared...
