Can Anyone Tell Me What Type Of Fish This Is?

Can anyone tell me what type of fish this is? I had it given to me and no one is to sure what is it. Its burgandy with bright blue spots oven its length.

Jewel cichlid maybe, it's very dark though...?

They're known for their aggression.....

If you have been given it, and from the pics I would say thats a Jewel cichlid, african and mean little blighters, what fish to you have in with it?

It seems very quiet it does not seem to aggressive. Its in with a few convicts and two small oscars

At least the fish you have with it can hold their own for the most part...just wait and see I guess...

You do know about the unwritten rule of not mixing african and american cichlids right? Africans are normally too much trouble, but you might be lucky.

I think a couple of members here have or had the odd african in with american cichlids, maybe they can share their experiences?

Very similar but its dorsal and tail fins and burgandy with blue spots and the body is a slightly different burgandy. the fins are alot brighter than the body

They are very deep colors

I just took a heaps better picture. It does not show how deep the colors are though.

Yeah, that's a Jewel cichlid.

That has to be a jewel cichlid, I can just make out the dark spot near the head end and the other higher up spot 2/3 towards the tail

If you search google images for a jewel cichlid you'll see the same markings and a variety of colourations out there, yours being another I am guessing.

Bingo, i think we have it. I googled it and found one almost identical.

yes thats a jewel, you should be ok with convicts and oscar, convicts definately as they can hold their own against most fish. Not kept oscars you may have to watch it with them as they are slower. It will be peacful an quiet for a while till it decided it wants the tank as his territory. I had 2 of these given to me they went for everything I ended up housing them with my little turtle till I re-homed them and they even went for the turtle.

A fish can get territorial when it is on it's own, in preparation for that day they might meet a mate...

Just keep an eye on things and have a back out plan!
