Can Anyone Tell Me What Type Of Fish This Is?

With these guys you never know, its just a case of keeping an eye on its behaviour, soon as it starts aggresivly chasing or lip locking with the others its best to move it. As oscars grow quickly it should leave them alone, however an oscar could do it some serious damage or even kill it if it was annoyed enough. Its have to definately say with cichlids as they have their own personalities, some are just down tight mean others really gentle. The latin name of the Jewel is Hemichromis bimaculatus. So long as your tank is big enough and enough hiding spots you could be ok. They are a nice looking fish.

Its going to be either Hemichromis guttatus (turquoise jewel) or more likely Hemichromis bimaculatus (jewel)

They are only in a 5ft tank at the moment, that I know is a little on the small size keeping in mind they are only small fish at the moment. I pick up my new 8x2x2ft tank in the next couple of weeks. So by the time I get it plumbed up and cycled they should be in the new tank with in the next mouth or two.

It's true that you shouldn't mix African and SA cichlids but there are rare exceptions.Jewels are usually OK with convicts that are larger and equally aggressive (researched mine before I got them). I've had 3 jewels living with cons for 8 months now with no seroius problems. A few chases and "staring contests" but nothing nasty.The are in a big tank though with lots of hiding places, wood etc so each fish can have its own territory
