I went to feed my fish this morning and noticed a huge bubble nest in Squishy's tank. It wasn't there last night. He must have spent all night making it. He hasn't seen a female since I got him 6 months ago. So why is he building a nest? I have no intention of breeding bettas. No time and no room for babies or the female. He is very protective of his nest. I walked up to the tank to feed him and he swam to his nest and flared at me!

lol it's just normal behaviour for them. They do not need any particular trigger to do it but most betta keepers feel it means they are happy!

A healthy male in good condition at the right temperature will almost always have a nest ready. Mine never does but I keep him a bit cool and house him with those boisterous endlers.

So he's just happy and healthy? He did like the snack of ghost shrimp that I didn't mean to give him. I bought 2 for each tank as a cleanup crew. He ate one and the other is hiding somewhere in the plants, unless he got to it already.

A Betta fish will make a bubble nest because it's happy and healthy, even if it has never seen a female in it's life it will still make one, they dont need a female to make a bubblenest, they also just make one in the hopes that a fertile female passes by, but a Betta fish will be absolutely fine without a female
