im very upset to find blinky bill my cory dead in his little flower pot cave. i have had him 2 weeks at most and was a great little character and best friends with oscar my male betta.

as i spend much of my time staring at my tank i can say 100% he looked fine last night, but when i looked this morning a noticed a small red patch under his skin on his belly, so not being much of an expert with illnesses i added some interpet anti-internal bacteria (about 11.30am this morning) and at 5pm today i found him dead and ive got to say im gutted.

i tested my water yesterday : ph 7.6, amoonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 20ppm

i have some pictures of him and this red patch which i have to say has definately doubled in size, does anyone know what this may be?

also will i need to do a water change or anything because he died in there and may infect the other fish or is this not neccessary??

Its internal then?

Looks nasty, any chance he could have got caught behind the heater? Looks like burns.

i dont think he could fit behind the heater, its pretty much touching the glass.. the red mark looks like its underneath the skin not actually on it

If its under the skin its more like scepticimia (sp?)

i was also thinking caught behind a heater or sucked up in a filter pipe, had this with a fish before, when i pulled it out it looked like that

hmm..im not convinced on either of those ideas, as i said before i dont think he could of got stuck behind the heater, the filter i have is an elite mini A-130
and i have it set on the lowest setting as possible for the betta, so im not sure it would of been strong enough to suck him up

i was thinking he had some sort of internal bug? which is why he looked fine then suddenly died

It looks like a massive bacterial infection. It will probably spread to other catfish but shouldn't pose any problems to a Betta as long as the water quality is good. The fish might have been a bit stressed and if you overdosed with the medication it possibly pushed him over the edge. Catfish are scaleless and generally don't do well when it comes to medications. When treating catfish it is a good idea to only use half strength. The container of medicine should have some info on it stating to use at a lower dose rate when treating scaleless fishes.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

Wow, I stopped buying cory cats from my LFS because they all died after two nights and looked just like that, with the red mark... Sorry, I don't know what happened.

i just find it a bit odd, he looked absolutely fine and then within a space of a few hours hes dead with a big red patch on him :-(

The third type of infection produced by Aeromonas is by no means the least. This form is often the most virulent (potent) and can be rapidly fatal. This insidious form does not produce any noticeable external ulcers. The most notable feature is a behavioral change in which the infected fish generally become listless and lethargic. Some fish may lose color or appear darker. The fish do not feed, frequently seem off balance and may sink to the bottom laying on their sides. The course of the disease is rapid, and by the time the behavioral changes are noticed, the entire population of a tank may succumb, sometimes in a day or so. This is an internal infection, with the bacteria being found in the kidneys and blood of these fish. The bacteria produce potent toxins that account for the severity of the disease.

this sounds very much like it

i dont want my betta and platties to get it, should i do a water change just in case?

Yes water changes.
If you think your fish are at risk anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Evidence of internal bacterial infection is red streaks to the fins and red patches or blotches on the body of the fish. Can be very hard to treat and this is one of the few chemicals on the market which attempts a cure.
