Big Tank Problem

I am having great success using carrots cut length ways as bait for the snails. They can't seem to resist the carrot and within a short space of time are all over it. From there I just pull out the carrot scarp the snails off and put the carrot back in, The carrots I am usin are raw and are lasting really well with the bonus that my bristle nose catfish are also having a munch on the carrot.

You could even use the snails as free food for your fish, just crush their shells and drop them in!

I often do squash the snails for my fish to eat and even the bristle noses love munching on them, but of late the snails have had a bit of a population explosion and I have declared WAR on them. I tried going down the chemical route (with no fish in the tank or filter medium, just the live plants gravel and ornamnets that would be staying in the tank once the treatment was completed - just as well I had other tanks I could put these other fish in) and the up shot of all that effort was a nice healthy snail population rebuilding their numbers back up to their previous numbers

. Mechanical removal may be slow and boring process but I think eventually with the help of my Pakistani loaches I will eventually beat the snails in to some type of submission. I hope

With only 3 fish feeding twice a day will almost definitely mean still over feeding. I feed my fish about once every 3 days, and I've got 28 of them. And I still have loads of snails as well. I go around and squash all visible ones whenever I can be bothered, but that's more an attempt to keep them under control a bit rather than get rid of them outright.

To the OP: unfortunately, there is little that can be done to really erradicate them. Especially with a tank like yours. A different tank may help the problem by leaving less places for the snails to breed and food to lodge, but they will always find a way. That's how nature works. If you want to get rid completely then buy a new tank, cycle it, move your fish over and completely break down the old tank. If you don't take anything but fish from old to new tank you won't have snails. Otherwise you'll just have to live with them.

Thanks for all the advice. Just dropped in a piece of carrot and hope it will work and don't worry ATK! I am certainly not going to sell it. Thanks again everyone.

By the way I will remove the carrot once covered with snail so it will not be over feeding.

easy buy two KILLER SNAILS i did and all snails are gone only the two killers in there now

thay only cost me £1.70 each

Just looked at the carrot slice. About 4 to 5 on it. Left it over night. Is this the maximum you will get on the carrot? Or will they be attracted to it more in the White light?
