In all my years of keeping fish, I have never used Algae Wafers. When I had marine tanks, I used Algae sheets for my tangs, etc but I decided to get some algae wafers mainly for my clown pleco, and I was amazed at how many of the other fish love these wafers. I searched Amazon and found that Hikari had great reviews, so I bought a 250g bag for £16; these will last for ages.

Yeah it's funny how many critters like that stuff. I had a Siamese algae eater that wouldn't touch it, and a picky bumblebee oto that would eat nothing else.
They don't look very appealing to me.
It's become considerably more expensive over the years but like you said, one bag goes a long way.

Over the last few years I’ve become fanboy of Hikari products, because they’re good quality and the fish gobble them up. If you need bulk packs, they also sell 1kg which is really good value for money if you have lots of fish. Also, Tetra make algae crisps which are a cheaper alternative - they’re cheaper than Hikari and decent quality.

Take advantage of the season and pick up a zucchini at a market. Cut it into coins, then put wax paper between the slices and freeze it. The freezing will break its structure, allowing herbivorous fish to get to it. The rind holds it together, but has to be fished out when they're done. You may be amazed at how they go for that once they figure it out. It's dirt cheap (I grow them for this) and very nutritional, and if you choose the size of the vegetable carefully, causes no mess. You want a middling sized one.
I also use a local coastal product - dulse, a purple/red seaweed my fish love. I also use all manner of algae wafers, though with the zucchini coins, a bag lasts probably beyond it's peak nutrition. I haven't bought wafers for a few years, but the bag still has some in it.
