Azul's been getting more sluggish as he's grown older, I suspect he's around 2 or 3 years old. Lately he's been struggling with fin melt (despite good water conditions) so I changed up the tank to include nothing even remotely sharp. This morning I woke up to disintegrating fins -->

They had a strange light line across them. Is this just from age? I remember reading a thread on here where an older betta always fought against fin melt, is this the same here?

What a terrible disease for Bettas! Aparently, its most common cause is stress from an improper environment. I had to look it up and it's also called fin rot which I've heard of before. Treatment is fairly standard but finding the cause might be tricky if what you are saying is accurate.

See this article:

I'll do another small water change and add in some salt. I've never had an older betta like this, pretty much anything "off" is freaking me out

Another treatment for fin rot, if indeed that what it is, is esha2000. It's fantastic for clearing it up.

I'd bought a fresh batch of female guppies a while back and after a week or so,one in particular started showing signs of fin rot. After the initial three day course all signs had completely cleared up, I treat again a week later as it advised and all my fish were happy and healthy again
Hope he gets well soon, he's a beautiful fish :)

Azul died last night. :rip: I believe it was from age, he'd been slowly (over the course of months) losing his coloration and excess energy.

Rip little guy :(

I am  sorry to hear that Lyra.
