Betta Help Needed! (lost Sight + Smell)

Help drain the fluids by doing an epson salt bath, 3 grams per liter. for 15 minutes. That can help drain fluids, but dropsy is often caused by kidney failure, which is sadly incurable, and leads to a slow and painful death due to sepsis (waste flowing throw your blood stream, like pee actually flowing through your veins.

Glad to help, i'm sure that goes for everyone....
(when you say washed what did you clean the toys and plants with?)
Keep us updated on the condition of your betta.

Cleaned with just mainly hot and cold water, spray spout, scrubbings.

Kidney failure, I have experience with that myself. But every case is different. I went through many major treatments, such pain, but I pulled through. If only all animal med/treatments were as advanced. I had the major water retainment too. Not good memories. But I pray that "Troy" will not suffer badly. I'll keep you posted.

Just to let you know that we are sending loving fishy thoughts to you and troy and your family and putting you all in our prayers! I've been trying to save a sick molly so I have some idea what you may be going through.

Many hugs to you!

Wendy and all,
Thanks so much. Your wishes and prayers mean a lot. I hoep they are making it through to "Troy". I will make another posting about his current condition and questions.

Troy's status.
He is still in there, struggling more to breathe though. Stays up near the surface. Must be starving, but can't eat. He also is tilted to one side, likely from being so heavy on one side with fluid retention. I wish I could do much more to help out making him more comfortable. (For we humans, we get pain killers, I.V. treatment, etc.)

Questions:

1) Will give next medication dosage tonight. I assume all of the water should be completely changed again, and each day to get the old parts taken out?

2) Same thing for the salt, and how often should I put in the salt (a miniscule amount I know, but if it helps relax, must keep). If it is every several hours, that seems too tough as water needs to be changed every time, it says are carton.

3) Temperature: Here, it is in the 90's, which is too hot. But we don't have an air conditioner up yet. But we did move his tank near the sliding doors, where he gets plenty of sunight. However, I am worrie dif it is too hot for him. I read that 78-85 or so is best. But likely water is in the mid 90's, I would guess. If I put an air conditioner on, it will be too cold. The only other possibiity is to bring him down to the basement where is much cooler, but there's be no sunlight! Is the current place okay?

Greatly appreciated. I am so thankful to you guys. Please let me know if there is something I can give you in return.

Hana

If he is having a struggle to get to the surface to breath you might lower his water level, or fix something to the side of his tanks so he can rest on it. On another forum someone up a suction cup on the side with a rock glued to it. Even a silk plant for him to rest on might help.

Bless him for holding on :-( is he in the pictures germ posted? If so, unfortunately, it'd be best to humanely euthanize him before he has to go slowly, as if it's dropsy like I think, he's not going to make it much longer anyhow :-( :-(

TROY PASSED AWAY TODAY...

Thank you everybody for your warm wishes to him and a shoulder for me. Poor guy. This morning, he was resting on the leaves as he liked. But then, he was able to swim around again, come up for air several times, so looked best as he could be in his condition. Just later today, while worrying if I should take him down to the basement for cooler temperature, he passed away (or if it was too dark and cool). He is in the corner, very puffy, poor guy, eyes still open. I spent some time with him, wishing him good wishes, and hope that he is happy now. Poor, poor guy. I had never known enough or followed up with enough effort to give best care for him, as I thought he was doing fine, and told by visitors that he looked well. the Dropsy seemed to happen overnight.

My family is thinking about a proper and decent way to bury him. Burying him in the dry dust/soil doesn't seem like a heavenly place to place him in. And hearing others flushing down the toilet sounds disrespectful, as it is a place for wastes. I was considering bringing him to a man made lake in my town, but not sure how proper it would be to put him in the water to float away. Couldn't he injure other animals with his illness? Or is it strange? I was also thinking of dropping him into a small stream or brook in the area. It is too hot to step out today (close to 100 degrees, which I can not handle), so my family suggested keeping his body in the refrigerator or freezer (though it makes me wince), so that his body will not deteriorate.

Can you all please give me your thoughts on a way of letting him go? Buried in the garden, Let out in a brook, in a lake? Any other proper thoughts?

Thank you again. Thank you so much. You are very caring people. I feel bad as I never spent enough time with him (I had been a dog/cat person my entire life, adn so confused when a friend dropped him off two years ago, but didn't want to give him away to someone who would not treat it well in a tiny bottle or something). But I never felt like I was close with him, until near his final days, we bonded more. Thanks for letting me spill out words.

Thank you all, and I wish you many happy fishies and friendships for you.

Many Thank Yous,

Hana

Sorry to hear about your loss
Its good to know that you tried your hardest to care for the fish, even if you didn't have a great knowledge to start with, we all start somewhere and you did alot more than many fishkeepers would.
I'm afraid you can't let him into any water systems as this could (as you thought) spread his illness to other fish. I'd find a nice quite place to bury him, and maybe put some sort of simple marker down as a sign of respect.
You very much did the right thing by coming to this forum and trying to find help for him, if at any point your considering keeping another tropical fish please just come on here and you'll get loads of suitable help.
Anyway, thanks for trying your hardest.

Germ,
Your'e the best. Thank you so much. Also the R.I.P. feedback was very helpful. I am glad that I read that. I think I will take your advice, and perhaps in our garden so he'll always be with me. That is where some of my dearest pets (who i consider like siblings even) lay their rest.

During Troy's years with me, my cats also had interest and entertainment, especially for the first few weeks, seeing a lovely little animal swimming about. Of course they never swatted or anything, but lay themselves down on a nearby seat and just watched contentedly.

Thank you again for your words and advice. I admire you very much. Germ, please do let me know if you think of something I can do for you, and you know my email address also.

Appreciation,
Hana

i use to have a really really old betta. he was 4 years old and man he was blind. i would use a pair of tweezers and tap his nose so it would fell like the food bumped him then he would attack it and id quickly let go. VEry sorry for your loss my friend. RIP.

RIP little guy, sorry or your loss. If you can't get to a brook or stream, you could always make a little coffin for him to be buried in the garden, it's your choice at least he's at peace now.

Well done for sticking by him and trying your hardest
