Betta Help Needed! (lost Sight + Smell)

Phew, not working after all, stupid variable shifts, ok not read earlier posts;
Thinking about it while walking to work (and back :crazy: )

2 things;
Wonderng if dechlorinators, ie; the tetra bettasafe have use by dates or are eventually perishable anyone?
Could you check the container.
I think, although i may not be correct that the symptoms are too broad for a specific illness therefore must be related to stress which is normally due to poor water quality. Any experienced members or fish keepers, does this chain of thought seem logical?
If so:
You need to get to the LFS as soon as possible and get the SeaChem prime in his water quick, (is this futile or naive?) while there purchase the daphinia, get the water tested and as i or noone else has thought of a specific disease get some general tonic.
So heres your list;
LFS soon, get seachem prime, general medication (liquid), take sample of your waterwith you and get it tested,
Get home quick;
add half a capful of seachem prime to the tank, post the water stats the shop gave you on to this forum, check on the fish, if no noticable improvement in his behaviour after an hour, add another half capful of prime and add the recommended dosage of the medication.

Any members think this seems like the right thing to do?

I just found out the website of Shutterfly to post up my pics. Could you please send me your email address, if you can look at the photos? Wish i could post htem up here but too hard for me.

Thank you. - H

Oh! Not good. Highly unlikely to survive this. Dropsy looks to have progressed quite well with this fish. That problem in itself is usually fatal. The blood where is that coming from? If from the gill possible Gill Flukes.

:/ I hate to agree to such bad news - but I do.

If it were me - in a fish of this age with such progressed dropsy - I'd euthinase - but that's me. No one shout at me please.
In my history of fish I've had a few with dropsy to that level; none have ever survived and always died a slow death while I tried to help.

Water issues are often said to be the cause of dropsy. And bettas living (in general) in such small water environments (more unstable) are far more at risk of foul water - especially and even more so if overfed with bloodworms.

All the best :/

Loen, i made a thread in conjuction with this in the emergency section...

oh the poor thing! I'd do as suggested earlier. Get water stats, do a water change adding prime as your declorinator (though just the water change itself would correct any water-quality problems, but I'm a big fan of Prime as a declor, in general), and see if there are any meds for gil flukes / dropsy -- (sorry, I have almost no experience with fishie diseases, fortunately... knock on wood!).

but one thing i did want to add -- is that a real sea shell I see in the pics? If so, definitely take that out. They can cause all kinds of problems with water hardness and pH. It's probably not the root cause of what's ailing your little guy, but it's probably not helping.

Good luck!

Well got to go make some dinner and get to bed;
Hope everything is okay whatever decision you make. Euthanasia may be your best option if you think the fish is suffering too much, but its understandable if you disagree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Bloo, Fishkies and Wilder (on the other post) are extremely experienced fish keepers and their advice and opinions are after many (in some cases many, many, many, many) years of fish keeping.
If this is the case and you decide not to euthanise this link explains salt bathing as mentioned in Wilders post on the other thread i created.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Cheers for everyones help.
Ps; don't hesitate to ask if you have anymore problems with your fish.

Bloodworms are a very common cause of constipation, I would never feed them every day as this will cause my discus to become bloated as well. Giving an overdose just worsens the situation. Try beefheart, pellets, and brineshrimp, more than you give them bloodworms. Bloodworms should be more of a rare treat IMO.

Thank you guys so very much.

GERM< thank you for going through the effort posting a few of the photos I took. I can't beleive it, but I spent my entire day all for poo Troy. All of you are so caring and sound experienced and helpful. I spoke to 3 different fish specialists (and at two different pet stores!). They were very nice to help me choose what to get.

Maracyn-Two: the treatment I just bought.
Also, bought a whole carton of salt for the water, which the specialist chose for me.

Tonight, since I've been on, my whole family literally has been so kind to help me out, shopping, and then filtering, cleaning, and washing the entire tank. We took out all toys or balls we had inside for safety, and thoroughly washed the fake plants, as he loves to rest in the leaves.

He still seems to have lots of energy, though needs to go to the surface for air very often. I will continue the 5 day medication/treatment, and also the relaxing salt, and clean thoroughly.

Thank goodness that the school year JUST ended in my town, as I would not have had a minute. I teach many students, so as many took off for camp and vacation, I never has as much time as this week!

GERM, they couldn't seem to find the daphinia, but I do still have the new Tetra Color flakes, Shrimp, Betta Gold pellets, and blood worms, which I will try to avoid.

Pheow, finally going to try and relax a bit. I had been researching adn shopping and talking all day. Please send warm thoughts to "Troy." I know kidney failure can be excruciating. But I'll still keep my hopes up and eyes open for improvement, or if not, comfort.

Thank you all so much,
Goodnight,

Hana

Glad to help, i'm sure that goes for everyone....
