Before I Seriously Damage A £100 Brand New Filter

I was told to just bend the clips a little to make them fit better. Which Ive done, but yeah they are just little metal clips with a thin piece of metal that slids thru them to clip down the lid to the canister, which btw you lose really easily as they drop off every time you move the canister

The lid itself once the canister has been working is nigh on impossible to remove for maintenance as it literally vacuums itself on.

To be honest, I dont know why these are rated so highly, personally I think they are made from cheap materials and nothing like as solid as fluvals or tetratecs. Worst purchase Ive made so far in several years of keeping fish.

Oh and no airstone/diffuser on any of my tanks.

If the lid is vacuumed on that tight that doesn't sounds right to me. That would imply that there is negativbe pressure within the cannister, and there should always be positive pressure due to the natural syphoning action of the water.
You aren't restricting the inlet of the filter in anyway are you? Perhaps with a prefilter sponge, or maybe a thinner / small inlet pipe than outlet pipe?
Thats the only sorts of things I can think of to give you negative cannister pressure of that level... -_-

EDIT: Another thought, just check that the inlet valve is opening fully when you open it, and not staying partially closed or blocked

All valves fully opened, you have two valves on each pipe with these and all four are completely open, the outlet pipe is the thinner pipe so not that. The filter media is set so that it sits on a lattice part that is 2 inch from the bottom of the canister so nothing stopping the flow either.

The vacuum is apparently normal for these filters, Ive read it on many reviews/forums over the last few days.

Fair enough, stumped me then :)

Good luck with whatever you choose to do with it, also let us know what filter you choose in teh end, and how you get on with it please :)

its strange that the 2 pipes are diffrent sizes on my classic they are both the same

I'm really sorry to hear about your bad experience. I thought I'd just quote a couple of things from the consumer rights department.

If you buy goods on the Internet, you still have the same rights as if you were shopping on the high street, in relation to faulty or poorly described goods.
In addition, you are entitled to a seven working-day 'cooling off' period.

* If you have only used it a few times or haven’t had a reasonable opportunity to check them, you are probably entitled to a refund for a fault or poor description, or alternatively you may request a replacement.

* If the fault is only minor and can easily be put right, it is reasonable to accept a repair. This won’t stop you claiming a replacement or refund if the repair turns out to be unsatisfactory.

* If you have used it more than a few times or have had a reasonable opportunity to check them, you are probably still entitled to a repair or replacement. A repair should be carried out within a reasonable period of time and without causing you significant inconvenience. Any repair should restore goods to a satisfactory condition. If this does not happen, you are entitled to a replacement or compensation. This could be a sum of money or the cost of hiring a temporary replacement, or perhaps the loan of a replacement.

* If the goods cannot be replaced or repaired economically, you are entitled to a refund. The trader may make a reduction from the price you paid to allow for the use you have had from the goods.

* If the goods have damaged anything else or you are out of pocket in any other way, you may be entitled to compensation over and above the price of the original goods.

The trader must sort out your problem, not the manufacturer

Remember, if you are entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or compensation, it is the trader who must sort out your problem. The trader cannot tell you to go back to the manufacturer.

In my opinion, if you're confident that the item has not worked as inteded from day one and you've made steps to contact the seller in a reasonable amount of time, there should be grounds for you getting a complete refund or a COMPLETE replacement.

Kind regards

Jimi
