Baby Rotkeil Serverum Diary. Hatched 4/3/10

All fry doing great, one in batch 1 is growing lots quicker than the rest, cheeky little fatty he is getting too lol he is a good full cm and looks like a propper little sev now

Glad to hear it!

Sounds like he's the next big boss in someone's tank :)

I'm waiting for my silk plants to arrive, then it's going to be a re-scape with more slate and rock at one end and the wood up the other...with plants scattered around. It WILL be ready for any severum bombardment :)

I am just gonna keep a small selection of live plants. Floating water lettuce if I can, and maybe a fern and moss who knows, but that will be it, that's the plan anyway.

Do you think the surface plants would get eaten by greedy little severums? Do they at least steer clear of java fern?

Cheers

Your floating lettuce/frogbit will be munched quickly. Whilst they wont eat Java fern or Anubias, they do so enjoy to shred it, spit it out and ruin your nice clean tank with it. I gave up on all live plants including the fern and anubias because I got sick of fishing it out. Some people do get away with some plants, but it depends on the naughtiness of the Severum in question.

Thanks Minxfishy, why did I suspect that to be the answer!

More fake silk plants for surface cover now then, more online shopping :)

I might try a fast growing plant, maybe they'll not eat it quick enough

Or just go all silk :)

If they are anything like their parents they love nothing better than to destroy a large clump of Java fern overnight, then swim around the tank with the stalk and root in their mouth. If you dont mind clearing up the mess they love playing with java fern.

Silk plants all the way if I can bear the look, replanting a silk plant is easier and cheaper than shopping for a new one

Take a look at sydeco plants (and similar good quality plastics) ok they cost a bit more, but are Ive found much nicer looking than any of the silks, which fade quickly and are a pain to clean. Whereas these plastic ones are pretty realistic (not that ugly colourful ones, but the large greens), dont fade and a doddle to clean, just run them under hot water (or stick them in the dishwasher as I do) occassionally. Anyway, just an idea for ya.

OK, updated pics of the wrigglers

Do you know at what age and size rotkeil's become sexually active and pair off Star4? Or sevs in general? Just wondering about stock levels and how much space I need ;)

Ask me a question I know the answer to  Trying to work out with my pair, I guess I had them about 8 months I think before they spawned, Minxy had them first, they were about 4" when I had them and bred at about 6-7". Age wise, I would guess they were about 12-18 months old. Sorry cant be clearer. From what I have read you need a group and wait for them to pair, I was lucky, my "boys" ended up being a pair.

star how much would you be selling them for? as id rather take a long trip to birmingham to get a true one and well kept ones than going to a lfs

Sorry :) I know you got them late on and wasn't sure how much history you had on yours...

I am hoping I get a pairing at 6" max, that would be a good size to sell off the least randy ones before they need too much space :) Mind you, 12 months down the line I may just get a bigger tank and keep more than one pair

Hopefully the better half will fall in love with them as that will make a 3rd tank easier to get the thumbs up for

Thanks
