basically is it suitable for an aquarium i want to change from gravel to sand

Yup, perfectly safe.

The best way is to rinse all the sand you need before hand, making sure when water is added it clears up quickly. This is best done with a few buckets and a hose and put sand in bit by bit and rinse it through.

Then I suppose the 'best' thing to do is to put the fish in another tank, or tub with a filter and change all the substrate around.

AS PDSimon said, Argos sand is safe. Great stuff, fairly easy to rinse and OK to use. Have used it in 2 of my tanks for past 9 months with no problems

Got some Argos play sand myself the other day. 3 bags for the price of 2 at the moment (£5.98 for 45kg) Relatively easy to wash as well. I've just got to wait until nobody is around to see me put the tank water and fish in the bath while i change the gravel to sand

Ive had it in my tank for over a year, rinse it well and you'll have crystal clear water within an hour provided you have good filtration. I dont however recommend buying it and carrying it home in a rucksack, feels alot heavier after 30mins or so.

Fill a bucket with a 1/3 sand and use a hosepipe with the bucket tilted at an angle. The silt will float up and dissolve in the water and over flow out of the bucket, however the sand is too heavy to be disturbed enough to come out of the top of the bucket. I did this with two bags and I can honestly say the only sand that I lost was when I was tipping the clean sand into another bucket. Works very fast as well!
