Argos Play Sand

Theres no need to take all the water out...
Take a syphon hose, suck out the sand on top by holding the end far away, so it just takes the top layer of it off, syphon it into a bucket (or two depending on ammount). Remove the water that came with it and wash through. Now use another bucket, remove the laterite (or whatever it is...) into another bucket, then the rest of the sand into the first bucket, then give it all another good wash. Then replace the sand/laterite as needed. No need to empty all the water!

Ooooo thats clever - would never have thought of that

Damn right :shifty:
I had to do it when I got loads of brown algea growing in and on the sand, just syphoned it out and gave it a good washing, worked a treat :good:

was just thinking the same thing! didnt even think of using my gravel vac to get the sand out (what i normally try and avoid in other tanks! lol)

Thanks for the suggestion, i may even be able to seperate the sand from the laterite to some point this way also =)

Theyre pretty handy for those kind things, good luck.

what is laterite?

so all i have to do is give it a dam good wash before putting it in the tank?

I used a 10 litre bucket and split each bag into thirds and cleaned a third at a time. Took quite a while and lots of stirring - I bought a metal straining spoon to mix it up with  TBH I was probably too mad about the cleaning, but having said that - I put the sand in the tank when it was clean, filled up the tank with water and within 15-20 minutes I had a clear tank. No cloudiness, no scum, no nothing :good:
