Argos Play Sand

Thats whats in my tanks yes. Just give it a very good washing to get all the silt out of it.

Hi,

Sorry dont mean to hijack the topic but.. I used Argos play sand but forgot to wash it out, my Tank is now super cloudy but filtering through slowly (its a new tank so there wont be any fish till its all setup and cycled properly). Am I ok to just let it filter out and do some water changes to get rid of it?

Cheers,

Craig

I think if its possible you should take out the water, empty out the sand and wash it and start again  I know that sounds like a complete pain in the rear end but I used argos play sand and it was quite gunky, took about 3 hours to wash enough for my 400 litre tank so I reckon you could be waiting a while for the filter to clear that lot  also all that gunk in the filter may not do it or your cycle and favours

On the positive side though - when its washed and in situ it looks fab :good:

If you have a spare filter fill it will filter wool and it will get rid of most the small particales and should clear it alot quicker then standard filter pads. Dont really see the need to to it all back out like the other poster said. My argos sand took about 10 minutes to clean till the water was very clear in the bucket.

uh oh, i think i have made a big problem for myself, i have a sand and laterite base and then topped off with just sand - if i take it out its going to all mix up together..

is there any other way (even if it takes ages) i can fix it? - should i do 100% water changes whilst moving the top layers of sand around to get the gunk out and repeat many times?

Yeah but how many buckets did it take to do enough for your tank?? Mine only took 10 mins per bucket too, but I had to do loads of buckets cos I have a big tank!

Also when I was cleaning mine the water would run clear then when I stirred it up again more froth would form on the top of the water so I reckon that if scottca just leaves the filter to do the work as soon as anything disturbs the sand the cloudiness will return  I still say the best option is to take it out and clean it properly

I am looking at converting to sand. Particularly argos sand. I have a Juwel Trigon 350 and I am wondering if 4 or 5 bags will be enough. Any opinions?

my tank is 121cm x50cm and it took 4 bags to give a 3 to 4 cm covering :good:

I can take out the top layers of sand ok without any problems, the layer with the laterite however, i can still take it out but is it ok to wash it? The box didnt say anything about washing it and looking online nobody seemed to wash theres either?

One and a half buckets i needed (small tank, small room etc). All be it the best way to start off is to indeed wash it propery as you suggest but once its in the tank its not so easy :) At the end of the day no matter how long it takes it is worth the effort. My fish seem to like the sand much much more. Espically my black moor goldfish!

You dont need to wash the laterite.

was just thinking that myself - just take out the top layer and wash and replace - better than nothing but no so much aggro as removing all of it with the laterite :good:

cool ok, will take out the top layer as deep as I can get it without hiting the laterite, prob is, the laterite is also mixed with some sand thats not been washed fully, dont imagine it would cause a problem as its deep down and prob wont get disturbed however will it contain anything that would harm the tank? its the argos play sand that said no chemicals etc

Theres no need to take all the water out...
Take a syphon hose, suck out the sand on top by holding the end far away, so it just takes the top layer of it off, syphon it into a bucket (or two depending on ammount). Remove the water that came with it and wash through. Now use another bucket, remove the laterite (or whatever it is...) into another bucket, then the rest of the sand into the first bucket, then give it all another good wash. Then replace the sand/laterite as needed. No need to empty all the water!
