3- Having a tube connecting an outdoor pond to an indoor tank. It would be cool in the summer to have my severum follow me outside
Have you already done this? I would love some details on your setup or plans for one!

Being in a cold environment, I thought about creating an indoor pond inside a sun room that would connect to an outside pond. In the winter, somehow the connection could be block and the outside pond drained for the winter. The 'how' in closing the connection is still up in the air...

I would love to have my fish around through out the year instead of hibernating under the ice. And like you said, how cool to have the fish free to go inside/out.

i wonder if it would be possible to build a pipe between tanks. that would look awesome. as long as one tank was lower then the other then the pipe would stay full of water. it would be really hard to keep up to temp and to keep clean though. just imagine like a big hamster cage around your room but full of fish.

actually, with one tank lower than the other, you'd just end up with a giant siphon for about 2 minutes. to do a fish highway, you really just need two tanks with water lines at the same height and a fullly enclosed tube (completely filled with water) running between them. you could do a open-air highway, but it would have to be completely flat and have the same water-line as the two connected tanks.

thanks for the links. very cool ideas! the hamster setup for the dwarf puffers was quite original.

Instead of a pond/tank connection, I was envisioning two inground ponds, one inside a sunroom and one outside, with a stream-like channel in between. A pump would flow water back to the indoor pond. The stream between two ponds isn't the issue, I've seen this setup between two outdoor ponds. The issue is figuring a way that can shut off the stream and keep the fish in the indoor pond during the winter. I think I need to research the panamal canal.

I was inspired for it when I saw a swimming pool that flowed under a wall so that it spanned inside and outside. Of course, it isn't meant to be drained nor sectioned off. But it did get me thinking about how cool it could be to have fish swim between inside/outside and somehow have the benefit of keeping them inside during winter.

Well, the thread was about crazy setups!!

So far, the setup is to have the indoor pond with a ledge that when the water reached a certain height, the water would flow over and fill the stream. To cut off the flow, bring the indoor pond's water height well below the stream's depth and of course the ledge and somehow shut a door or something to seal off the wall. Since it's a sunroom, the sealing probably isn't as crucial.

*sigh* i can see it... just don't know all the details. :/
