Anabantoids And Smoking?

hey everyone!!!

i know this thread had been dead for a while but i have jus read it,found it interesting and wondered if people have any fresh ideas to add to this?

my betta is in my bedroom and i use deodorant (obviously) and hairspray
i didnt even think about it the other week until i noticed i strange kind of like film on top of the water
i changed the water and carried on as normal and it happened again
then lastweek i changed my water and stopped using deo and hairspray in my bedroom and it was fine all lastweek
i change the water yesterdayand have had no poblems

i know its not the most in depth experiment and its not relating to smoking but i thought it was appropiate to this thread :good:

Hi
I have no doubt that the things we use every day like deodorants, hairsprays, fabric sprays, room freshners etc....etc..... can do harm to anabantoids. I think i read somewhere that joss sticks had been the probable cause of death to some bettas that someone on this forum had.

There are a few things we can control, but there are pollutants everywhere. Having tight fitting lids and condensation trays will probably help keep some out though. However, if we use pumps or the venturi effect tubes on internal filters, any pollutants will be pumped straight into the tank.
I think I'm right in saying that if the water surface is very still, you will get a build up of debris on the surface causing that film effect. Although if the surface is moving, pollutants are more easily absorbed into the water. Bit of a catch 22 situation for anabantoids?

wow i never even thought about that...though it makes sense. thanksfully none of my personal hygiene products are "spray on"! hehe.

my question from reading this thread, why won't smokers just step outside? to me its awfully weird 'cause on this side of the pond at least, i haven't met anyone with AC in their homes that still smokes inside of it...even my fiancee's family who has no AC steps outside to smoke

isn't it overwhelming how easily we can hurt or damage our little guys that we try so hard to care for?

sorry im not trying to turn it into a trainwreck, just trying to give it perspective.

I guess just saying that we worry so much about our fish, and we possibley dont realise what else could hurt them.

I know, I think it hurts us all.

Hate to change things up, but what about drugs and fish? I know, it might seem that someone did this to me:

but seriously, I think drugs can harm fish too. I've actually heard of people putting fish on steroids to make them huge. Do you think this would harm their lifespan like it does people?

I'd say hairspray and deodrant could quite possibly be killers. I had a plant on dressing table once and it died within 2 weeks,,,realised it was hairspray mist that had been landing on it. And i know how i have trouble breathing when i've sprayed them and make a bolt for fresh air.
