Ammonia

Hi ive been reading the article on fishless cycling and how it says to use ammonia ,im settig a 450 litre tank up and want to use this method BUT when i went to my lfs and asked for some they looked at me with a rather worried expression until a salesperson recognised me and explained they cant sell it due it being used by terrorists and that it was now against the law to sell it. Is this true and what other additive could i use to start my ammonia cycle .

Hi,

I doubt if any of the fish shops sell it. Your best bet is a hardware store like Homebase or Boots also stock it.

the salesperson did say they used to sell it so am guessing i may not get it anywhere, but il give my local hardware store a try as they sometimes have odd stuff lying around that others may not sell

They won't be able to sell anything that is concentrated. But, most hardware and general stores will still have it in the cleaning supply section. It will be very dilute, almost completely water (no more than 4% ammonia, typically).

boots one is 9.5% which is the default number on the calculator on the beginners section

ive been to boots this avo and found a household cleaning ammonia but wasnt sure it was the one to get so left it but i did read on the ingredients that it was 9.5% ,would this be ok to put in the tank

could someone also help me on the measurements ,how much would i put into a 100G tank (450ltrs)

Hi,

If it looked like this one then it is correct -> Boots website

Click on the calculator link at the top to determine how much you need, I just had a quick look and it stated 23ml of ammonia.

cheers yes thats the one will go get it in the morning and get started .Also is it possible to put 1 of my filters with mature media in to get a good start and maybe speed the process up slightly
and would i have to put fish in to keep the bacteria from dying or just add the ammonia as normal

You've got a whole filter thats mature? Put it in and it should speed up the cycle considerably.

You would add ammonia as normal once you've added it.

yes simon im running a smaller 29g tank that has been set up for 3 nearly 4 years and now im starting a 100g tank unfortunately when i started out i wasnt given the correct info to cycle but its now running perfectly ,since being on the site ive read about the fishless cycle and want to do things the correct way as i dont want to endanger my fish from the other tank ..
