I got some plants in the post today. I rinsed them in a salt solution and then dirty tank water.

I put a couple of them in my 5gallon which has 3 amano shrimp and a betta. And some in my 20gallon which has 6 amano shrimp, 2 cherry shrimp and 14 endlers.

My amano shrimp in the 5g now look dead apart from the small mouth pincher things that are still going.

The ones in the 20g are huddling together under bogwood - they're normally spread out.

Is there any hope for them?

What might have caused it?

I've taken the plants out and done/doing a 30% water change in both tanks

The betta and endlers are fine atm - is this likely to continue?

I'm tempted to move my betta to my 20g with my endlers temporarily as if all the shrimp die overnight the nitrates ect may get too high - is this a good idea?

PLEASE HELP!!

The plants i bought - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221004661418?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_3486wt_905

take the plants out and do a massive water change...if you have any carbon lying around then put some in your filter.

have a read here about the plants you have bought

I know very little about shrimps, but having read the recent PFK article about shrimps dying after the addition of contaminated plants, I would be looking at removing the plants and doing a 95% (basically leaving just enough water to cover the fish and shrimps), to give them some sort of hope of pulling through.

I've put 2 of the shrimp from the 5g in a bucket of freshwater with fake plants (hopefully this will help and at least this means if they die they won't rot and ruin the water for the betta)

the ones in the 20g don't seem so bad - just behaving oddly so i've done a water change and crossed my fingers

I've also put activated carbon in the filters which i hope will help.

Just got home from work and there all still alive and look well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sooo relieved - i really had no hope last night, especially for the 3 from the 5g that went into the bucket

I'm going to do a small water change on the 20g today and i'll put the 3 shrimp that are currently in the bucket into the 20g instead of the 5g

I'll wait a couple of weeks to put some shrimp back into the 5g - hopefully then the copper will have gone and the shrimp will have fully recovered from the shock.

Will i still be able to use the plants if i rinse them better or soak them? I'll do some more research on it anyway and if i do put them back in it'll only be a couple at a time.

Thank you so much for all your help :)

Glad to hear all is well with the shrimp :)

I'm sure Ian and the planted section users will give you some good advice on where to go from here with the plants (I'm struggling to keep some Anubias alive despite ferts and daily Easycarbo, while I found my Onion Plant bulb rotten last weekend despite only being <33% submerged in gravel).

I would have thought it was the salt solution that you rinsed your plants in ,thankfully they`re still alive ,also shrimp don`t like any amounts of copper, glad they`re all ok though !!
