I'm now boycotting my local LFS and possibly the largest dedicated aquarium in brisbane as they have just started to stock dyed fish. Besides being inhumane I think they just looked stupid the colouring was now where near being natural, let alone natural in nature. I even overheard one of the attendents openly admitting to someone (who said they had heard they reduced life expectancy) that they will only live 3 months if they are lucky. I'm so ticked off with them and plan never to go back there. They had both black widows and glass fish grrrrrr.

Not Happy

I have never heard of this before and really cannot see the point of it, surely the whole reason to keep tropical fish is so that you can enjoy them in their natural colours in an artificial habitat (ie, your home).
If these fish actually have a shortened life span is there not an Australian body like the RSPCA which could outlaw this practise??

Hope this trend does not come over here and hope is stops in Australia too.

afraid its happening in england and maybe all of the mainland.

Apparently is been happeneing in england since the 80's although it's much less common there now after a campaign was launched against it some time ago

Well here in Louisiana I have never heard of any stories dying fish. But it could be in some stores that I have not been to eventhough it may be happening I have never seen it down here.

honestly i see little point in you boycotting the store If you want to make any difference best try and talk to the store or offer an alternative

The Store Obviously knows the downfalls of to the fish itself and doesnt care. As I dont know of any alternitive to this type of thing other than not having them at all I doubt they would be willing to go along those lines having already started down the dark path. While I in no way consider myself a greenie or animal rights activist I do consider it VERY wrong to cause a much shortened life and possibly much pain (yet to be proven one way or other) just for a pretty fish.

I have not had the misfortune of having witnessed dyed fish for myself as all the fish shops round here have signed the Anti Died Fish Campaign... I think its a sad practice that should never be encouraged or condoned.

However, I do agree that you should infact talk to the owners, express how you feel and that you dont want to shop in a place that is ok with the horrible process which is involved in dying the fish. You should then also inform them you think they should change their ways for the welfare of the fishes rather than the to line their pockets with easy cash from the unaware public.

Don't get me wrong I don't support it at all but all your doing is hurting yourself they just won't care if you boycott it and it's one more displeased customer they donn't have to deal with and can ignore

EDIT don't mean to bash I haven't done anything either big al's is the only place around that sells these but i'd buy anything there if they have a good deal

i agree with vantge, unless a whole bunch of people start boycotting, they arent going to change, they have plenty of customers to keep their store running

Its pretty sad, i have a local lfs that sells them, but i dont use them anyway.

I confronted him about them, and he said they were trying to get more colour in their tanks, i mean, its pathetic, they have 4 tanks which 3 of which are filled with goldfish, one tank with plants, and 1 tropical filled with moss barbs, and he says there trying to get more colour in and increase sales, thats just sad.

Have you asked them about why they stock them directly?

Don't worry, I will do something about it. The reason I didn't say anything at the time was I had the unfortunate problem of three over excited and boistrous children under six running riot in the store, I just wanted to get out of there, but had decided then and there I would tell them what I thought. I will be taking the matter to the RSPCA as well, if they are unwilling to do something about it, and I'll let them know that too! :flex:

I'm more an activist that Katchan  no offence of course! He just does things a little differently than I do.

I think you will find the RSPCA very unhelpful as they do not class fish as animals.... how the **** they work that one out i WONT know!

I think dying fish is awful. I'd heard and read about it on TFF, but I hadn't actual seen dyed fish before. Then I went into a LFS and saw some poor little corys with dyed tails. There were hot pink and lilac. I was horrified, and told everyone that I knew with fish. :-( Poor little guys.
