Latest update for all who is interested:

I have made an official complaint with the RSPCA, Qld. I'm just waiting to hear from them.

Cheers, Xanthia

They got back to me and have begun an investigation, which obviously means they are taking it seriously and are going to do something about it. YAY for the RSPCA!!!

I think telling the manager / owner how you feel, and then saying you're never going to buy from there again is the right approach.
They might not care about the fish, but they're a business and should care about the profits. Yep, its only one person, but if everyone refused to financially support businesses they considered to be behaving unethically, then it would force them to rethink.
And ultimately, you can only be responsible for your own choices - whether it makes a difference or not, do you want your money to support a business whose actions you think are appalling?

I have not run across dyed fish in my area yet, but believe me I will not shop anywhere that does carry them. The only power we have is in our $$$$. If we stop supporting these places and spread the word about them so others won't buy there, we can make a difference. It's called the ripple effect.

Many people who buy those fish are impulse buyers who know nothing about them. They will spend money on a tank and fish and then when the fish die in a few months, they are discouraged and usually stop keeping fish. Those of us who are regular customers have got to take our business to places that care about the fish and support them with our cold hard cash.

I know not everyone has a variety of lfs in their area, and I understand there are times you have to purchase supplies at one of these places, but for those of us who have choices, we need to take a stand.

Good for you, i have never seen it myself but i would have done the same, my mate a few year ago made a complaint to a pet shop and they ignored her so she went to the papers and the problem was soon fixed.

I really find it hard to believe that so many haven't seen dyed fish before. Maybe you just don't realize that what you're looking at is a dyed fish. We have 3 successful LFS here in my area of upstate New York and 3 other pet stores with large fish departments, ALL of them have a large selection of dyed fish and have for quite some time. Anything from various dyed tetra species to dyed blood parrot fish (the blood parrots are the most popular)
I don't agree with the practice, but if I were to boycott all my LFS then I wouldnt have any fish in my tanks.

One of the fishkeeping magazines in the UK publishes a list of lfs who have promised never to stock dyed fish. I think it is Practical Fishkeeping.
