Addiction

Probably a stupid post but does anyone else have this addiction and urge with fish, loving fish, wanting more and more fish and cant get enough of them, i find my self getting more and more tanks so i can house all of these wonderful fish, anyone else feel the same? and i would like to know, what got you into the hobby?

yer and won 4 fish off a fair 2 died cos i had no clue about cycling and ammonia soon found out

mines not a love for fish its just like an addiction... i love the idear of a whole eco system in a small space

Mine started when my partner kept asking for a fish tank. i was not really bothered at the time, but now i can not stay away. she quite often tells me to calm down as i get over excited with new ideas.

It worries me a bit how I lose all perspective of money when it comes to the tank and how I consider it a priority.

I've happily forked out £75 for a new filter this week without a blink, and yet I went in a shop today thinking that I will need a new winter coat and maybe some boots, picked a pair up and saw they were £60 and could not imagine spending 'so much money' on something like that.

I also have another filter worth £70 just sitting next to the tank that I need to sell because it wasn't suitable, but I haven't got around to it yet - yet I'm sure if I had £70 of clothes to return I'd get on with it pretty quickly.

I once started to add up how much I'd spent on eBay just on fish stuff one year - I had to stop, it was making me feel queasy!

moneys a problem with me... i normaly get stuff for free or try to get it off my parents (im 17 and in collage)... my substrate is from the steam down my road... it seams to work well enough for me no problems yet =] (i did boil it up tho)...rocks out the garden and then birthday presents and my LFS likes me they gave me a 90l aquarium =D cos they dident need it and it had afew scratches on it (old lady upgraded hers) + all little bits of plants for free and afew discounts

Money's a problem for me too, been off work ill with cancer all year and unemployed all the year before that... but my tank is my biggest form of relaxation and something to focus on, so I tell myself it's worth it. I just wish I wasn't such an impulse buyer

As to what got me into the hobby - buying 2 goldfish in my first year at uni, put them in an 8 litre 'tank'. Stumbled across a goldfish forum. Learnt errors of my ways. Within a month they were in a 90 litre tank and laid loads of eggs, which I salvaged and hatched in storage tubs with air filters in my bedroom (didn't get a wink of sleep for months!) - then the goldfish and all their babies ended up in a friend's pond, and I went onto tropical, aiming to stick to a few guppies in a 10 gallon. That didn't last either!

iv got 2 tanks set up at the moment i want more to set up and like a breeders tank but heaters cost money which i dont have

i got 4 goldfish to start me off won off a fair about a year ago... 2 died.. cos i dident know anything about fish... then i got a little filter and they dident look good in there cos we dident have lighting for it so for a xmas pressy my mum got me a 20L tank for the 2 goldfish was coldwater for awhile then got a 3F tropical (the signature tank) went into tropical and got interested in plants after my LFS said about amano and showed me a pic the. 3f tank turned into planted and the little 16L tank (originally with goldfish in it turned into a stickel back tank in my room (from the local steam once again =D- they dident last long and i relseased them soon after got a heater and went tropical with 4 neons) built a pond cold waterfish went in that 20L which i got for xmas got the heater from the tropical with the neons (which all died-i dont know why) now its in my room with a guppie and 2 otos =D planted

Yep, you've pretty much described about 90% of the members on here!

My mum kept fish when I was little. Not for long, only a couple of years, but enough for me to love them. When I had suitable accomodation I took her old fishtank off her, and haven't looked back!

You have no idea how much I can identify with that. £100+ on fish stuff in a week, no problem! £30 on a pair of shoes? "Oh god! But do I really need them? I know I've got a hole in the sole of my other one that I can stick my finger through... but that's not really a reason to buy new shoes is it? I mean, £30... I could buy like 8 wild cories for that...!"

Corys are a more sensible purchase, shoes are definitely overrated

Aaaaah, I can't identify with all of the above. My girlfriend says "you'll quite happily spend lots on fish rubbish but refuse to put a new CD player in the car" I then say "the old CD player works" I then get told "the fish you already have work"
I'm really unsure how I got into fishkeeping, I know I wanted to for a long time before I did get a tank though.
I'd love to just be "happy" with one tank, I was when I got my first for about a week.

I got my first tank for free off a friend who didnt want it any more it was only a 30Litre with a figure of 8 puffer but soon got bored and wanted bigger and better fish and tanks lol i soon wanted bigger fish and will probably end up owning a couple monster fish either arowana or giant snakeheads as my friend is selling his 850 litre tank cheap for me due to an upgrade. But yeah i keep wanting to buy more and more fish and im always down the local fish store having a look, i keep handing my old tanks down to a friend who has recently taken up the hpbby and who is also addicted as you say there facinating creatures and lovely to keep

I started out at 8 years old with a 10 gallon tank (they had metal frames then!) Soon I was setting up tanks in my classrooms. I had numerous tanks in my house and in the backyard, also a pond. When I got old enough my first job was in a fish store. So were my next four jobs after that. Then I became sales manager for a wholesale tropical fish warehouse. I went around and sold fish to the pet stores. I got to see almost every freshwater fish there was available at the time. After about 12 years of working with fish, I finally took a higher paying non-fish job. I spent many years cold turkey, without one tank. My wife and I have a 22 month old baby girl. I said to my wife we should get a tank for our daughter . So here I am starting it all over again. There is no escape from this addiction!
