Can anyone suggest a pet cichlid that stays between 9 and 10 inches as I reckon an oscar would outgrow its tank before I had the chance to buy it a 5ft.

Current favourite is a blue texas, but it has been suggested to me that they may become shy if kept alone and pose threats to most dithers.

Any opinions?

True Parrot, Blue Acara, Jack Dempsey? A few from the top of my head.

I'd love a Parrot... not sure how it would fit in with my tank as i hear they're better in a species only set up

Not sure why a Texas wouldn't work? alongside something like 7 adult Giant Danios and maybe a few Hoplos or 4-line pims, I think it could go quite well provided the texas is added whilst still small.

What tank size are you thinking of starting them off in?

My suggestion would be a Vieja Zonatus with maybe a large plec or a few good sized cats

You won't get a Herichthys carpintis (the common, nicer green texas) over 8" anyway, they did a thread on mfk and no one had one bigger than 8".

I had one for 3 years and she never got past 8" either.

Blue Texas, Herichthys cyanoguttatus, the true 'Texas Cichlid', and uncommon in the trade will hit around 10"

Green terror  I'll have a female needing a new home in the near future prob lol.

No Green Texas is the name given by shops to the Carpintis complex (many similar fish ie: escondido) ...when they are little they are a mint green colour.

Truth is they are not even from texas so the best way to describe them is by 'Carpintis'

Well all i can say is the young they had were mint/light blue colouration and the lone adult was bright blue and all were labelled as Carpintis?!

Also...if you are looking for a big fish thats gentle and pretty, look at red spotted Severums

Big male gold Severums are nice to

I was under the impression that Red spots would get way too big for a 4ft? Only sevs i really like are Rotkeils and Heros, but i don't class these really as 'wet pets'

Yeh they all go blue when older, Carpintis have nicer pearls and facial markings, plus are more gentle and stay smaller and not as deep bodied.

Also in the UK you will find it hard to find the true Texas Cichlid because nobody wants them, also they are very common in the US because people can catch there own.

Also if your willing to pay about £5000 andget one of these imported from Japan, they take about 50 years to create from line (inter)breeding between Carpintis, Blood Parrots, Flowerhorns
