I have got 4 baby platies that i aquired from someone around christmas time and they havent really grown much if at all(there length is about the width of my pinky finger). There living in my 10 gallon tank with a little sponge over the intake of the Aqua clear 50 so they dont get sucked up. Ive noticed that the filter isnt doing that great of a job with the sponge covering it so I need to take it off and let it run freely from now on.

Will 4 little tiny platies do fine in a 2.5G heated tank with no filter or airstone.I could load it up with live plants... I could also do as many water changes as needed but what im worried about is them getting their oxygen. Would the plants provide all the oxygen thats needed. I think it will be better for them as well so i can moniter them eating and make sure they eat lots so they can finally grow.

Please any help.

Thanks

Even if you go into your local pet shop and ask for 'oxygenating plants', somebody with real knowledge will tell you, its practically a myth. You need to remember that all plants produce oxygen.. Its a way of life =] but you cannot solely rely on plants for oxygen.. Will not work.. Shame, as it would save everyones electricity bills lol! You really do need a filter, and some kind of aeriation.. If not a pump, get a 3 in one filter? You can pick a small cheap one up off ebay for about £5. If not, then buy oxygen tablets, they work =] I use them when transporting big fish. As for the filter, you need to remember good bacteria will not grow, and bad bacteria will multiply. Filters keep the nitrAtes, nitrItes and ammonia level. Dont forget a fish will be living, eating, swimming in its own, and possibly other fishes feaces.. Which isnt nice, and fish will end up dying with infections.

Why don't you just get a floating breeding net/trap ( most fish stores sell them or Ebay ) put it in your ten gallon and keep them in that to grow?

2.5 gallons is a pretty useless size for a tank as the only living things that can really live in it is shrimp and snails and even they need a filter.

So no basically. Just get a breeding net.
