25 Gallon Planted Community Journey V2

You want the output to point away from the intake tube.

The output spray bar is pointing straight down at the moment to get max flow onto the plants, would this provide the best circulation?

The best way is to point the spray holes so the flow hits the front glass, the flow will then slide down, travel towards the bottom and go back up to the spraybar. This will provide enough oxygen for the fish providing the spraybar ripples the surface, and also the best circular flow for the plants.

That's what I was told as well, but the flow isn't powerful enough to be felt when I put my hand in front of the front glass, it kind of dies off about half way through the depth of the tank.

Is it the same when you lower the water level a bit? Does it just hit the middle of the tank then? It will still push the water forward.
It's still the best way in your case I would think.

You can't have the water surface still because how is oxygen going to enter the tank then? Once you have fish in there you need water surface movement of some sort.

Air stone is not desirebable in a planted tank, and it isn't the most effective when it comes to oxygen.

What would you suggest over that then? I don't know much about this bubble wall thing but assumed it was just a long airstone... Once I get the rest of the plants in there (2 anubias and 3 bunches of corkscrew val) that should add to the oxygen input, right?

Just a few plants won't do much to the oxygen levels.
You just need the water surface to be agitated by the filter spraybar itself.

A bubble wall would agitate the the surface therefore providing oxygen. A single bubble stone doesn't do much which is why a bubble wall is so much better. Though, if possible, it probably would be better just to make sure that the filter spraybar is directed towards the surface as that would probably offer a lot more surface agitation and oxygen.

Yeah, I have heard about that a lot too. Only issue is my tank sits in my bedroom, about 2 metres from my head when I sleep so when the spray bar really agitates the surface of the water it can be quite noisy. Will give it another shot though. I have a question about this weekends stocking though, as I'm going to add 4 Platys first, 3 female 1 male, should I get all 4 of one species or all different species or 2 and 2 ? I think, in the finished product, having four different species of Platy might look a bit random and out of place. What do you guys think?

It all depends what you want to do. You could get 4 with the same colors, but different markings/patterns. You have to keep in mind that they're going to reproduce and with a 10 gallon you'll soon have to find a new home for the babies, and it's considered bad form to enter hybrids into the world :) lol...It's early and I haven't had any coffee yet, so that's the best way I can explain what I'm trying to say

You would be hard pressed to actually find true wild form platies in the LFS.  Most of the hobby platies are just color morphs of the wild forms... not varying species.

Personally, I think its better to have either a group of males only if you want variety - OR a group of one color morph if you are going with a male and harem.

Yeah, I'm not planning on separating any of the platy fry at all, so any that survive in the community tank with the 8 tetra, 8 cories and 2 dwarf cichlids (not to mention their own parents!) will either be added to the second tank, or given to my lfs who are keen on them :)

Sorry, I'm completely dazed as to how I wrote species 3 times without even realising I was meant to be saying variations. Variations***! Oops! :/
