well think i have decided that i want to do a species only setup, looking for something that is nice on the eye and are active swimmers /feeders,just bloody hard deciding what to go with.

what would you have and why?

tank is 5x2x2.5

While I'm intending to combine them with my Chaetostoma milesi and four Megalechis thoracata (Hoplo Catfish), a group of Ilyodon xantusi would make full use of a 100g. Bigger than your average livebearers at ~12cm, fry batches not so big or so frequent, lovely colours.

Same would go for many Barilius/Opsrius species, like the ones I passed on to MartinS about a month ago. Pier Aquatics have several species availble with courier options these days, as do Wildwoods via "tropical fish 2 your door."

discus, parrot fish, severums, puffers, piranah, oscars, archer fish, arrowana, reed fish, eels? any of those fish would rule in that size tank

parrot fish are active and intellegent fish. discus are beautifull fish that can look great in groups of 5 or 6 but accompanied by small schooling/shaling fish such as tetras :)

Arowana in a 5x2x2? No way. An aro need around an 8x3x3... At least if you want it to live comfortably. A silver aro will get over 2 foot with a growth rate of around 2 inches per month until it reaches around 12 inch, then it will start to slow down.

why dont you go and have a look in the oddballs section or predatory part of the forum.. there are some very very inspiring threads in there, its a biggish tank with potential, theres one fella in particular in those sections T1KARMAN what he has done ( with a public size aquarium albeit lol) is amazing!

good luck :)

Buck tooth tetras, ravenous, active, and beautiful, but due to temperament don't get along with other fish. If I got anything else in hopes of going species only, I'd be too tempted to add other fishes

How about a nice colony of Characodon lateralis? I love these colorful little goodeids and wish I had that much room for them to breed in large numbers. They are a delightful fish that require minimal care and reward you with their bright colors. They are also one of the goodeids and the IUCN lists them as endangered so you can also be a responsible fish keeper by breeding and preserving an endangered species. Yes they are one of the many goodeids that I keep.

Thanks! Agree its a decent size tank but not capable of haousing an arowana,I'm thinking of going species only to concentrate on the desired fishes needs and wellbeing.

I do like the thought of maybe breeding an endangered or rare species tho.

took the filter back today and sods law it worked mint in the shop, typical haha.

seen some asian cichlids for sale asked the and done a little research about them, seems like lots of people know about the orange and green chromides but not much about the third less obvious asian cichlid species Etroplus canarensis (Canara pearlspot ) has anyone any experience with this fish?

Nice choice :) An excellent contender for this tank

This is a great profile on them but there is quite a bit about them on the net and a few posts on this forum about them so worth a search

http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Etroplus&species=canarensis&id=754

Im not 100% but I think this is the one thats refered to as the shoaling cichlid so its worth getting a good number of them - they are also pretty rare, for a while they where thought extinct!

Nobodyofthegoat could help you out with finding tank mates as well as he knows his stuff about fish from this region :) though Im not sure these are from such fast flowing rivers as his set ups :)

Also worth pointing out this is a freshwater Chromide where as the others often drift into brackish waters.

Love the ideas of the rare livebearers but not for me personally - I think these E.Canarensis are going to create such an interesting tank :)

thanks for the info and link Wills, been doing a little more research and they are looking like the best bet at the mo,seems like feeding could be a little challange but should be interesting, also seem a bit timid so should suit a species only.
