    Cichlid Aggression

Hi guys, I have two cichlids (Along with two armored carfish who aren't causing problems) and they are showing major agression towards eachother. It started as the yellow one being the boss (there was a larger blue one that died due to nematodes and all have since been treated), and now they've...

How do YOU handle your water changes?

Good afternoon! I am going on almost two months of being a fish owner. I hear different advice on the frequency/amount of water changes necessary for a tank. Because I hear so many different suggestions I’m curious what everyone else does for their tank and how it works for them! I currently...

    Fish-in cycle & water quality?

Hey everyone, First time fish keeper, doing a fish-in cycle using Seachem stability & API quick start. I'm doing 20-30% water changes whenever the water parameters need it, but can't really get into the substrate with my gravel vac without disturbing the good bacteria. That's the problem -...

    Close call story with fry

I was doing a water change when I noticed one of my platy fry in the bucket. I had already dumped out most of the water. I probably didn't notice him at first because water isn't the only thing that gets sucked out (Gunk, fish poop, my sand if I'm not careful). Since the bucket was nearly empty...

Came home from work to a dead fishy :(

I had three tiger barbs in my ten gallon one of them was trying to become alpha it seems and was attacking one of the other tiger barbs so I removed the aggressive tiger barb and put him in another tank and then the next day I come home from work and the fish that was attacked by the aggressive...

    Going on vacation, recommendations?

Hi guys, I'm going out for 2 weeks starting in mid-August. I have nobody close enough that I can leave feeding to, and after last year's experience and reading, I've decided that, most likely; I'll just leave the fish without food. So, here's where I am: I I've started to ramp up feeding to...

Help me with my unintentional negligence

I realized that I haven't been cleaning the tank properly, but was only concerned when my corydoras started dying off. I was doing water changes with cups (but I did add water conditioner). I would set a reminder to do it every two weeks. I want to get a siphon but I'm afraid I could...

    Cloudy water and dying fish

I have a 55gallon tank that has been established for over a year. I decided Saturday to redecorate. Added new gravel, plants and decor. Everything was rinsed. I done a 50% water change also. I left the fish in the tank. I couldn't catch them, so to avoid stressing them anymore I left them alone...

    Introducing rainwater into water changes

Hello, As you’ve read; I’m now keen to take the shift into introducing rainwater into my water changes for my 200l freshwater planted tank. I live in a very hard water area. The GH (20) and KH (16) are way over the comfortable limit. Would greatly appreciate any feedback on my plan here: -...

    0ppm after 7 days

For well over a year iv been battling no3 in small amounts usually around 20-40ppm after a 7 period , iv been really trying to eliminate the small factors which can contribute to what I call sleeper nitrate ( dirty filter , pockets of detritus , over feeding etc . Last week I added a peace...

If I put tap water in first then water conditioner will the chlorine in my tap water kill all my beneficial bacteria?

Setting up a new tank and I put some rocks and filter media from my other tanks in to help cycle but I just realized that even though I've always done it this way does the chlorine kill my beneficial bacteria? I always put tap water in and then conditioner in after I fill the water up.

API Aqua Essential and Nitrate Reduction

Does anyone have any experience of the relatively new API Aqua Essential, in particular its claims of reducing nitrate? It seems to be their answer to Seachem Prime, as an all in one dechlorinator and ammonia/nitrite "detoxifier" but with the added claim of actually "removing" nitrates. My tap...

    betta pacing & breathing heavily

i got my very first betta, harry, two weeks ago today. today i did his first water change and took out about half of the water and replaced it with conditioned water (tried to keep it about 80 degrees.) i didn’t notice him doing this immediately after the change, but recently he’s being darting...

    Bad town water?

I just heard from a friend that our town has really bad water, and when she had a tank, she only used store water and added hardness. We get this pink stuff that collects in the shower. She said it's actually a form of bacteria. I have been treating my water with Prime and then for PH with...

Do you do water changes while cycling?

I've read mixed things on if you're supposed to do water changes or not during cycling. My ammonia level is about 8ppm nitrite I would say is between 0 and .25ppm and no Nitrate is id about 20 ppm. I have 2 live plants in there if that helps. And im supposed to be doing anything to my tank or...

Nitrite constantly rising with no ammonia source

After a little help here, as I'm non-plussed. I'm mid-fishless cycle with a 450l (120 us gallon) tank and my nitrite readings are making no sense to me. I started with adding Dr Tim's ammonia a couple of weeks ago, plus "one and only" bacteria. I know there are mixed views on whether it does...

Utility water transfer pump for water changes???

Hello everyone, I’ve been an aquarium owner for over a year now and have an RODI setup with a storage tank for the water. I used to bucket/pitcher it in for every water change but I think it’s time to upgrade. I do realize I could hook it up to the tap and use water conditioner but that would...
