I've been a couple of Beta fish from a friend who has bred them in his tank.

My only reservation is that I'm not sure if they will mix with my other fish - mainly a pair of guppys I have. They look something like these ones...

The other fish I have in the tank are zebra danios / harlequin rasbora / algea eater / amano shrimp / cherry shrimp

From what i have been told and experience i dont think male and female bettas mix too well, usually after spawning they have to be seperated and only put together to breed as the male can bully the female.
also the guppys might be at risk, but with guppys its hit or miss from what i have tried. as they are going into an established tank you may be o.k as long as you dont add anymore a similar colour to the betta.

No sorry, as male betta are natorious for fighting other male's<garenteed>and betta's look similar in fin stucture you will nearly be garenteed a big fight, sorry, had your friend not told you this before,im sure if he breed's betta splenden he should know a little about the care

yep

but coulor dont mattter put a blue and a yellow betta in a tank and big problems

my friend isn't a professional breeder. he simply had a couple that bred. he thinks the betas won't fight with each other seeing as they are from the same brood and at the moment he's got a tank full of them that are getting on fine.

he like me, thinks the only problem may be from beta/guppy rivalry.

Betta's get more aggressive with age. The babies and one of the parents generally the female can be kept together as the babies mature they will fight. The only way to keep 2 bettas is to have a very large tank so that they can establish territories. Betta simplex, Betta imbellis, etc can be kept together though without too much of a problem its the betta splendens which are hyper aggressive.

Well I've heard of some breeders who keep their males and females together since birth and since they've always known each other, they don't fight and aren't aggressive toward each other.

I think you have to have a combination of particularly mild-mannered bettas and being siblings who've always been together for this to work.

Otherwise you've got no chance. And even then you're pushing it.
