To put it bluntly some people are just idiots.
Others are very knowledgeable but don’t waste time with a lot of "chit-Chat" and can come across as blunt or arrogant (which can come across even worse when it is written rather than spoken).

However the other reason people sometimes come across as confrontational is because they care a great deal about the hobby and the animals we keep and when they see something that they think/know is wrong it upsets them.

I'm normally a pretty laid back kind of guy but even I have on occasions been driven insane by some things I have seen on here. I normally try and avoid posting in topics where I know people aren't going to listen but sometimes I can’t help myself

Well muckluck as lil.guppy said people tend to feel a sense of ownership about their opinions and don't take well to being contradicted. Then along comes a cantankerous old fart like doresy and puts in his 2 cents worth. Finally along comes BTT pointing out that humor can help break it all down. Finally I am here, not a cantankerous old fart but an old fart just the same. My own opinion only matters to me when I am contradicted and then think about it a bit and realize the other guy was right and I really resent that because I know I was wrong in the first place.
As far as your question, cleaning a filter in tank water may be a good idea but I hope you took it out of the tank first. Otherwise why clean it? I am sure that must be what you meant but didn't say. I clean my canister type filters about every 2 months by much the same method and it has served me well for years. Not sure about other types of filter because I use very little else. I still have not figured out how often my sponge filter needs it but I think its more often than it gets.
