1) Do water changes
2) keep the light on
3) clean the gravel

Have i got this right:

Add ammonia (depending on size of tank) daily
this will create bacteria
Bacteria break amonia into nitrite amonia falls nitrite spikes, nitrite goes to nitrate nitrite falls amonia should be 0.
Takes up to 30 days
 
Your description of the cycle sounds right to me.

If you are fishless cycling then there is no need to change the water or clean the gravel or keep the light on. Get the tank cycled and then do that ready for the fish.

If you are cycling with fish, then I've never done that, but water changes will be involved.
