So as part of the tank renovation I am putting a new printed background on the tank.

I now have a black sand substrate and plants will be added beyond the java moss bogwood so far.

onto my question though: would you go for a black/blue/white/themed print? Seen one for a stone wall that was quite nifty.

Tis what im thinoing but ive noticed with my lighting and the colour of the hood that comes with reflected light the sand doesnt look jet black: a black background may highlight this.

black bin bags work well, no need to waste ink

Just realised this should technically sit in hardware. But its for a freshwater tank so im going to ignore that technicality, hopefully mods will too

I've found it depends a lot on your room lighting.  I tried black plastic bin bags, all the creases were really obvious.  Then I tried a 'proper' black background and I'm not happy with that either, it looks black where it sticks to the tank and reflective in other places.  So I will be ripping that out and going with black paint to do a proper job.

It also depends how many plants you've got, I think jet black looks good with a heavily planted style but a themed background looks better for lightly planted tanks.

Blue I think works best for marine tanks.

that's my tuppence worth :)

thank you for your tuppence :) helpful information there to consider, including the planted status of my tank :D planted it several times, but it gets massively destroyed by the fish each time, leaving a few select species.

My preference is always for blue. I think it brightens up the tank and makes the plants and fish 'pop' a bit more :)

I paint rarther than stick backgrounds on though

just set up new tank in wood frame and have used a little tester pot called "pumpkin" which looks nice against the wood frame.

through work i get thin board sheets which we throw away so i have cut a couple to size so i can get more tester pots, paint both sides different colours and just chop and change easily.

Once you go black you'll never go back

(couldn't resist)

Lol i'm avoiding paint testers like the plague right now. We've not decided what colour to paint the fake stone fireplace yet, but know it needs to be greyish. So we are now on the 45th shade of grey and still not found the one we need for the right colour during daylight and artificial light.

I so want to make some joke on the '50 Shades of Grey' theme now, but I can't think of one ;)

Black :) Plain and easy! Doesn't show the dirt as much.

I still like black. I'm hoping at some point I can just paint the back, because water stains are showing up between the glass and the background. Second choice would be solid blue.
