Which Sa Cichlid Would You Recommend For Me?

festivums... beautiful fish and I have always wanted to keep them

Sajica are lovely as well

hmmm decisions decisions, I am really tempted by either 2 rotkeils or 3 festivums. Spoilt for choice but know that I can only realistically choose one or the other. I have plenty of time to think about it as I've not even bought the tank yet

I'll probably let the missus and the kids make a decision as I know I'd be more than happy with either.

If it helps this is a picture of the parent rotkeils

West Yorkshire is a blooming big place  I would say I would ask hubby when he is on his travels but the car is on its last legs. Shame I have some really nice males too.

Hi Star,

They are stunning fish.

I'll have a think about it and let you know one way or the other, it is likely to be a couple of months at least before I'm all set up but great to know that there is somebody selling on such beautiful fish. :good:

Just out of interest, if I ended up with a pair, what are the chances of them spawning in relatively hard pH 7.6 water or do they need softer water?

Uarus are out for sure. I love my festivum I had 3 but 2 killed off the weaker one and then when the weak one was gone they picked on eachother. SO I sold one and kept the nice one. She is fine by her self living with my Discus grazing on algae. They are great fish but can get to be 6-8" I think 5" is common mine is almost a year old and 4" still growing. They get better and better with age the color really starts to come out when they grow. Mine is silver blue with hints of yellow

Some say a 52Gal is kind of small for a Severum it could work for a year or so with very few other tank mates.

I would go with 4+ festivums or just 1 don't get just 3 thats a very bad number.

you could get a keyhole with a festivum and some rams of another type of dwarf cichlid.

These guys are very under rated cichlids. I don't know why I think they are very classy looking.

These are tank bred, so I dont think the ph is going to affect them the same as wild or f1 usually does.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm veering towards the rotkeils at the moment.

I can get on with searching for a tank now. Thanks everybody for your advice. I'm sure I'll have some photos to share on here before too long.

I saw some rotkeils next to some festivums in the LFS today. Now don't get me wrong, the festivums are nice fish but I've definitely made my mind up about which feature fish to have in my tank - the rotkeils win hands down.

I'm on the lookout for a 4ft Rena which is about 340 litres so should give me plenty of space for a couple of them along with the other fish I mentioned.

Try Ebay, there have been some real bargains just lately :good:

Yeah, I've just missed out on a couple recently. I'm sure I'll get hold of one sooner rather than later. Would the extra height of a 340 litre 4ft as opposed to a 240 litre 4ft allow me to get more than 2 rotkeils into the tank?
