Just found these on e-bay..

you can take a horse to water.......blah blah blah
these people should be shot with the retailer who sold them too. In my opinion for buying fish they dont intend to keep when they grow.No doubt if they do get rid of them they will buy something thats going to put them in the same boat later on.
It's wrong.......rant over and out

it's not all bad, btw I may get some rays then sell them on when they get too big, because the smaller rays which I can keep for life are harder to keep.

Also, at least he mentions the tank size issue, and doesn't say stuff like, oh a 3ft would be good

PFK have reported about this problem, about how many large fish are offered to public aquariums its quite shocking. During the survey period wich i believe was 3 months (and not covering all public aquariums) 21 pacu's was offered and none was taken by the aquariums. some fish are taken, but not many and depending what fish it is.

thats not the point 'WHY BUY FISH ' that you will probably not find new homes for!!!!!

If anyone wants more info about fish offered and fish taken i will post it.

I completely agree, if people bothered to look into fish like they do most other animals, this would not happen. There is a great place in blackburn called aquascope, they sell all supplies and fish but also have a display area. Here they have huge tanks with a couple ?? irredescent sharks, shows how big they grow. Can't remember exactly but think they were irredescent. That may put some off buying, if they can see the full size.

I think because of stupid people who cant ask the right questions, retailers who sell anything to anyone, will eventually lead to a ban on large fish. thus people who can cater for these fish wont be able to get them. we will see what the future brings.

Rays are a tad different to pacus though... Rays are highly desirable uncommon oddballs that don't grow *that* huge, whereas pacus are common as muck (well, not quite, but not exactly 'oh wow, its a pacu!' standard) that generally (given the msot common species) grow too large for even the most MTS affected fishkeeper.

I agree about rays, but there are other fish on the list.thats what i was trying to highlight.

This study is part of the 'Big fish' Campaign, survey carried out by Dr. Peter Burgess.
this is only a survey of just 11 public aquariums less than half of aquarium centres in uk and its a period of 4 months not 3 months as i stated above...

32% of people knew the eventual size of the fish that they have purchased.

 should be in the wild if people cant even bother to do their research

Well if people are trying to give away black or asian arowana's then i'll take them!!

A lot of the super tankbusters shouldnt be in the hobby, things like Redtail cats, tiger shovelnoses, pacu and pangasius cats just get too large for anyone to house realisticly.

Maybe this guy didn't know his fish would get this big?

Many of us have had to give up our prized monster fish because we can't house them anymore - and usually it's an innocent purchase in the first place, with misleading info often coming from the person selling it.

Hindsight is great when you are experienced in the hobby. But a newbie who's just bought their first tank, goes down to his LFS and see's what looks like an interesting fish, is totally unaware of the size it may grow to, believing the old myth that fish will only grow to the size of the tank! Two years down the line (if that) has a monster fish that barely fits in the tank nose to tail!

Now he's an experienced fishkeeper, and is painfully aware of the eventual size the fish will grow to!

A sales person trying to meet targets will not be too bothered about spining a yarn so the customer puts some money in the till. And also knows that it is not a problem now. And is not their problem two years down the line!

Going back to the original post. The seller must have a huge, or hugely overstocked tank with the oscars, knife fish, etc... etc...! He might have just had half a chance of keeping the Pacu's if he removed all the other fish!
