OK one of my neot tetras was sitting by himself above some of my caves on the wall by the surface by himself then as soon as the light came on he swam down with the other neons and is still swimming with them. I noticed that his red is pale and is not bright like the others. Is he ok or is he sick?

if anything is wrong with him its probably ntd

i would take him out as soon as possible .....

so the others dont catch it too...

i recommend insted of keeping neons keep cardinals they are alot hardier and are less vonerable (spelling?) to the ntd

My mom wanted these and I haven't seen any cardinal by me lately. And I just want to make sure it's ntd before I kill him.

In my experience NTD is not that contagious amongst otherwise healthy neons.

Talking of killing the fish seems a tad premature.

Does the red line look bleached out or does it look fluffy as you can get false ntd which in saddleback columnaris, and bumps on the tummy area, also does the fish look restless.
Water stats would be good in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph to make sure it isnt water quality first.

Ntd is lethal to alot of fish so i don't know where you get that from.

im sorry to say this but

everything you said is exactly the opposite of what atmmachine should do

NTD is really really contagous

so i think that your previous "NTD" casualty wasnt the NTD and was a deffernt illness

edit.... no offence to your fish expertiece

as for atmmachine id dffnly seperate the fish for now... learn alittle about NTD and then see if all the symptoms check up... if so ... do what you have to do....

I haven't said anything about what atm should do so how can everything I said be wrong?

If NTD was that contagious then the other fish would already be infected so there would be no point in culling the one fish and if it isn't that contagious there's still no reason.

With my experience of neons, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Sometimes the pale patches can disappear by itself.

im sorry that i directed the reply to you....

i meant for it to be directed at atmmachine

if you understand what i mean

ps longdog. what you were hinting (what i felt) was to leave the fish with the others

now i did overexadurate about how contagious it is , but it was to cross off the hint that i was getting from you

This is the problem with ntd you can get false ntd which is saddleback columnaris and you can cure that with a strong bacterial med.
If a neon did have ntd it would wipe most of the tank out, i had it and i lost the lot, its a parasite and you cannot cure it, neon tetra are carrys of it, cardinal are not and they are not meant to get ntd.
Ntd is nasty and it more common then you think, 25 years ago maybe not, but not now you hear of it alot believe me.

Sorry for the late response, I'v had to sleep a little and I feel a little better but for some reason I was feeling dizzy and hot. I was supposed to change my water today but I think that will have to wait till tomorow since I still get dizzy if I stand up and move around. I managed to test my water today since I do it once a week and ammonia 0, nitrites 0, and nitrates were either 40 or 80 I couldn't tell but I know it was higher than 80 but I'v always had high nitrates and i don't know why. Sorry forgot to test ph but that has never been off. I haven't done a water change for a week either just to let you know, I do them on saturday but I don't feel well at all today for some reason. I have a 2.5 gallon up right now with nothing but a snail in it should I move him there. He's been swimming with the other neons all day now it's just his red strip is faded away or bleached out Wilder.

Thanks Austin

I know how you feel i've not been well either with the warm weather, i would move him to be on the safe side just to observe him, i wouldn't worry yet.
Get that water change done i know how you feel, hot and not well, no where you coming from no energy what so ever.
Does the red area looked bleached out, also test your tap nitrate but leave it for a couple of hours to get a true reading from the tap.
