i don't know what the problem could be...i got new lights for my 55G, it used to have the generic two 24" hood and lights with it (only 40 watts) and i got a compact flourescent fixture that is 4x55watts and now i'm getting an algae problem. also, the bolbitus is growing fine, but the brazil swords and java ferns don't seem to be growing at all! what's the deal?

Well first you uped your light output so that does help algae grow. Second java fern is a low light plant so you could be overdoing it with them. Might help to move the fern under another plant in the shade. Also more light means more need of co2 and iron. If you uped your co2 and added iron I would bet your plants would start growing.
