May consider having a temperate tank in the near future, but what temperature would be the best to keep it at?

What fish are you planning on keeping? I think that the subtropical band ranges from 18 - 22 degrees. I keep mine at 20, but it does vary on species.

Some of the cooler water species can live a lot lower than this, in anything down to around 5 - 7 degrees.

Depends entirely upon the fish in question, temperate is a term associated with seasonal variations in temperature below tropical (usually taken to be ~24C).

eg. Puntius denisonii (Redline Torpedo Barb) are "temperate", with 15C winters and 25C peak summer in their natural wild population in Indian rivers. Barilius spp. are regarded the same, but with a much narrower 18C winter and 22C summer.

Other fish regarded as temperate that immediately spring to mind are...
Peppered Corydoras
C. trilineatus
Bearded Corydoras
Rosy Barbs
Paradise Fish
Zebra/Leopard Danios
Florida Flagfish
Blind cave Tetra
Ilyodon spp. goodeids
Weather Loaches
Chaetostoma spp. ("Rubbernose Plecos")
Purple Spotted Gudgeon (nothern or southern, not both, not sure which is which without googling)
Empire Gudgeon
Persian Killifish
WCMM

Aren't guppies also considered temperate fish as they become less susceptible to diseases, live longer, and are happier in temperatures of around 72-75

Yes. Both of those fish do much better in lower temperatures than the average tropical temperatures, I would keep them in a temperature of around 74-75

Minnnt, I wish you lived here! I would set you up with a bunch of Marigold Variatus. I've got a population explosion going on here.

Thanks.

Thought about peppered cories and variatus platies?

Given how Peppered have been recorded in 15C water, while the Platy has been found in 20C water, I would aim for a 20C/68F during the winter months (Sept-Apr) and then slowly raise the temp to a peak in June of 24C/75F.

Thanks for all the advice. :) Definately a project for the future. Should be fun i reckon. :)

Creeker, i wish i lived near you, they sound great. Any pics?

OK minnnt, just for you I took a pic. Actually about a million pics, but none turned out very well. This was as good as I could do. One of the pairs here. One of the other females was giving birth as I was getting this pic. :cake:
