Wonderful kbod, you're clearly got the hang of it now and your tank sounds much better!

Glad you downsized and got a better fit for the gravel-vac. Establishing good gravel-vac habits is core to keeping a good healthy tank!

Yes, its great to take rocks and ornaments out to clean if you want, makes it much easier. No need to do it every time, but when you are not so rushed then it should be done. I'd just get an old toothbrush and make sure you rinse the heck out of it so there's no old stuff on it and use that to clean off the algae, which is probably what those spots are. Algae comes in browns and blacks as well as greens! Things in tanks feel slippery because there are "biofilms" grown by the bacteria on every surface eventually. That's normal and harmless.

Yes, the tank gets extremely cloudy and dirty when you gravel-vac. That's quite normal in an established tank with fish and/or plants. Your filter will clear it up after a while.

We try to help beginners establish good maintenance habits by gravel-vaccing at any water change, but if you're having to do two a day, then nobody's going to fault you for not doing it both times. On the other hand, I find I want to control the gravel cleaning cylinder and not let any of my fish get in it, which makes it pretty easy to at least lightly gravel-clean while I'm holding the thing, just to keep busy.

Yeah, hop the next transatlantic and get some filter muck, lol. The irony is I do actually happen to have an extra empty house at the mo!

thanks for help

wish i could take you up on the media havent heard anything yet from the pinned media notices in uk . shame about your house being empty lucky you i could do with a move

myself but too far out for me im afraid good luck finding a tenant or with whatever your planning for it .

my tank and fish seems to be doing ok .

except for 1 im worried about as 1 of my glowlight tetras has a white spot on his back end i noticed it today it definatly wasnt there before he seems ok , ive put a help add on emergencies

with some pics but cant seem to photo my fish well any tips greatful !

the more i look it seems to be inside him where his red stripe finnishes and his back tail/fin starts. hope hes gonna be ok ,dont no what to do ?

Yes, I could see the white spot on your glowlight but not well enough to have any idea what it might be. Maybe Wilder or someone over in emergencies will have an idea. Sometimes you just have to wait and see.

update glowlight with spot is ok still no more spots as of yet did 50 % water gravel vac change . but unsure if and what to do.

also as i was watching my fishes a glowlight swam and wedged itself into the side of the nosel that repumps out the water from the filter it couldnt get back

out ,then he ended up ripping itself open as it tried to get out ,and it died how do i stop anymore doing this ? i didnt even no any could fit in there. any ideas thanks ?

That's terrible. Maybe you could devise some netting rubber-banded on over the grid. You'd want the mesh size to keep fish out but let larger particles in if its the input siphon.

cheers rubber bands maybe best ,are they safe in tanks and do they rot or how often would they need to be changed ?

wondering how to work it as the part he wedged himself in wasnt the the bottom filter vent bit .

it was near the top by the out put nossle , there is a slight gap either side of the nossle so the nossle can be moved to direct the flow of water

it would mean ringing the nossle with loads of rubber bands which would enable it from moving, is this possible ?

unsure how to put net around that part ?

ideas welcomed

thanks x

was thinking of the bottom filter vent

maybe some other members will have ideas for guarding a dangerous outlet vent...

havent got any ideas for protecting filter yet,

i asked pets at home for advice and told them what had happened and they just laughedand thought it was funny saying they dont really no

what to do ! not much help there then .

well just an up date glowlight with white spot on his fin is still fine nothing has changed so maybe he is just developing some kind of marking ,i will still be keeping an eye on him

but glad for now it isnt anything nasty .
