I have been reading today and some people say the snails will eat the shrimp, while others say the shrimp will eat the snails.

I thought it was okay to have snails with shrimp. So I am bit confused by all this.

Any of you who keep shrimp and snails in the same tank with success, please let me know the kinds of snails you have in with your shrimp. I am going in the morning to get some ghost shrimp and I would love to add a snail of two to that.

Thanks!

It really depends on what shrimp or snails as some snails can be active predators and so can some shrimps, in the case of ghost shrimp they will be fine with algae eating snails, it is usually the case of watching the shrimp with the snails and not the other way around as they can move much quicker and have pincers.

What are your water parameters? Is your water soft or hard? Snails like Apple snails don't do well in soft acidic water.

Assassin snails will eat shrimp, and they do not seem to have any trouble catching them.

Mystery snails are cool and Pomecea Bridgesii (sp) will not eat healthy plant matter, How big is your tank, If you have soft acidic water you need to make sure your snails have a calcium rich diet or they will suffer from shell erosion. I highly recommend Mystery snails, they make wonderful pets and come in great colors , I used to have 3 ( killed by a careless pest controller ) that would come to the top of the tank every day begging for food.

But a word of warning, Treated and fed right these suckers grow BIG and I mean BIG

How long has your tank been set up? Ghost Shrimp like most shrimp prefer a cycled mature planted tank.

I have blue pearl shrimp with nerites and Malaysian trumpet snails and they've not bothered each other for the last 3 months

Assassin snails are speciallist at killing other snails. They could also kill shrimp that are molting and therfore unably to move away from the assassin snail.

However most other snails such as nerite's used in aquariums are strictly algae eaters. They will not eat shrimp.

No snail will do well in acidic very soft water. The acidic conditions will dissolve the shell and eventually will kill the snail. Putting crushed coral in the filter will neutralize the acid and maintain water harness at levels safe for shrimp. however the coral will not push the PH above 8 and will not make the water hard.

This is my 10 gallon tank. It has been set up and going for quite awhile now. It is heavily planted, or I think so anyway. It has algae and diatoms in that I have pretty much just let go and have not really tried to keep in check. I did this because I know shrimp like to eat algae...not sure about the diatiom bloom, but that will take care of itself in time anyway.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrates - between 10 and 20. It is hard to tell on that color card
PH - 7.2

I have some of these on order

I don't know if they will really be a good addition or not, as I am new to this, but I stumbled across them and thought they couldn't hurt the shrimp or snails anyway.

I don't want assassin snails. I know they will eat the shrimp ...and other snails. I just wanted a snail that will get along with the shrimp and vise versa. I have horned nerite snail in my 55 gallon and a couple of apple/mystery snails. I say apple/mystery because I don't think Petco knew exactly what they were and I know I sure didn't know enough to argue the point. One is golden and one is a midnight blue. They are pretty good sized and I love them. They did fine when the water had a really high PH and now that the water system has gotten the PH under control they are doing well at 7.2. ( the water department didn't know it was out of whack until I called them. A delivery system had gone on the blink and had to be replaced. )

So anyway, I am off to the pet store later today to see what I can find!

My Amano lived peacefully with an assassin until assassin died of old age and then the Amano ate his bff
I now have a nerite with the Amano and they hang out together in a cave quite often.
