Hey everyone. I bought my tank of ebay and have it all set up for about a month now. Anyway i also got this thing with my purchase and am not to sure what it is. I think it is a corner filter? If so, could this be used in a tank thats below 5 gallons?

Here are the pictures:

All help is greatly appreciated,

yes it's a filter, personally i'd get a proper internal filter as I only every use filters like this for small fry to save them getting sucked in

Well i was intending to give it to my girlfriend for her fighter fish (only 1 in there). How does this thing acutaly work?

looks like you drop an airstone into the opening at the top? or is this not a sponge filter type?

as far as I can remember you attach the airtube to the top not sure if it needs an airstone as well as it's years since I saw this kind. you will need an air pump and tubing anyway to run it

it works on the princible of air being pushed through the filter material and the air makes the muck particles go with it into the filter in the same way as a protien skimmer i think, however they are not very effective as they get the tiny bits of muck but not the big bits i think.

Those are box filters you have there. Good for slightly bigger fry, smaller ones will fit through the slots & get hung in the floss. Drop an air line down the middle, hook up an air pump, and you have a good flexible filter.

Put enough air through one of those & they will filter as well as a hob filter.

indeed, and only cost pennys!

I'd imagine it would be ok for just a fighter tank as they don't produce much waste.

reminds me I need to get another 2 for my fry tanks

For a betta you don't want a lot of flow, a small pump will do.

Any ideas on what sort of pump i should be getting for that small flow :) hehe my girlfriend is new to this hobby, as am i. Im almost through my fishless cycle in my tank but its not going to be a fighter tank so im not to sure about all this :\

For smaller pumps I've heard good things about the Rena's. Look int a Rena 100, should give you about 1 lpm air flow, which would be plenty for a betta. Get a gang valve as well, to bleed off some air if it's too much flow.

Okay thanks very much Tolak, ill have a look into that one soon as i get to a LFS. Thanks alot everyone

After looking a the Rena 100 on the internet, wouldnt it be too powerful? They all say 30 to 90 litre tank or upto around 20 gallons.

Is this thing quiet? Because i know it will be in her room and my UGF air pump was loud as so i did a bit of DIY and now only use it during the day to pump 2 air stones lol
